It sounds like this was a variation of the "Black Fire Snake" demo described at https://food-hacks.wonderhowto.com/how-to/make-fire-snake-from-sugar-baking-soda-0164401/ rather than the "Carbon Snake" or "Black Snake" demonstrations, which do not use flammable liquid.

"The teacher kept on pouring more rubbing alcohol onto the flame itself because the flame wasn't building up." Yet another example of ignorant, and impatient, teaching staff. I wonder if the "explosion" was actually a flame jet.
