T&TEC officials, TT Fire Services and electrical technicians from the Division of Infrastructure, Quarries and the Environment (DIQE) on Tuesday visited Scarborough Secondary after a fire broke out in one of the classrooms on Sunday night. According to Tobago TTUTA representative, Orlando Kerr, security at the school extinguished the fire before it got out of control. Students were sent home on Tuesday and school was closed yesterday as there were additional reports of electrical outlets sparking. The DIQE electrician was dispatched to carry out a further inspection of the school plant to ensure its safety before students return to classes.

Kerr said he was pleased so far with the Division of Education‰??s handling of the situation.

‰??Yes, because school was dismissed and students removed from the compound. There has been issues with the electrical system in the past because the school is very old and we‰??ve called for it to be relocated. There weren‰??t any fires (previously) but there have been issues with low voltage with AC units etcetera,‰?? he said.

Scarborough was not the only school closed yesterday, as Goodwood Secondary‰??s students were also told to stay home.

Jacqueline Job of the Division of Education, said while they would have preferred to avoid closing the schools, this action was necessary.

Goodwood Secondary‰??s closure was done for the disposal of unused chemicals in the school‰??s science lab as well as sanitization of an administrative block which experienced leakage due to a broken water line in the science lab. The Division of Education said officials from CARIRI have been engaged to conduct testing in the labs at Goodwood Secondary.

The Division of Education said the safety of all the island‰??s students is of paramount importance to them.

WOBURN, MA -- A building on 6th Road in Woburn was evcuated just after noon on Thursday as rescue personnel responded to a level three hazardous materials spill. According to scanner reports, one of 24, five-gallon containers of hydrogen chloride being stored on site was leaking.

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Proection was on scene as of 12:55 pm. Boston Solar and Barbour Stockwell are among the companies listed as being located at the address.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, Level 3 is the most serious classification for HazMat incidents. A Level 3 incidents are "beyond the capabilities of a single state or regional response team and requires additional assistance. Level 3 incidents can require resources from state and federal agencies and private industry. These incidents generally pose extreme, immediate, and/or long-term risk to the environment and public health."

UPDATE 11:16 a.m.: The Cincinnati Fire Department has completed its mitigation at Rhinegeist and all local roads have reopened.

The Cincinnati Fire Department is responding to a chemical spill at Rhinegeist Brewery in Over-the-Rhine, which has shut down nearby roads and impacted bus and streetcar service.

Cincinnati Fire & EMS tweeted Wednesday morning that units are on the scene of a chemical spill near Elm and Henry streets in Over-the-Rhine. They said there are no injuries and no need for evacuation. The fire department tweeted that the scene is stable.

Rhinegeist co-founder Bob Bonder said the brewery suffered a minor spill and evacuated the building as a precaution. He said nobody was hurt and the spill did not impact the brewery's production.

Bonder said the spill happened over the brewery's chemical pad, which is a treated concrete pad where chemicals are stored, along with drainage so any spill situation can be contained. Because the spill happened over the pad, the brewery was evacuated as a precaution. The chemicals are used for cleaning.

ST. LOUIS ‰?? The operator of a suburban St. Louis landfill where an underground fire smolders near illegally dumped radioactive waste is suing the drugmaker whose predecessor processed the Cold War-era nuclear material.

Bridgeton Landfill LLC seeks help paying for the $205 cleanup of the Superfund site in the lawsuit filed Tuesday against Mallinckrodt LLC, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported . The suit says Mallinckrodt‰??s predecessor, Mallinckrodt Chemical Works, refined uranium compounds that were used in the U.S. government‰??s Manhattan Project decades ago at its factory north of downtown St. Louis.

Later, leached barium sulfate from the weapons program was mixed with contaminated soil and used to cover trash at the West Lake Landfill, which is adjacent to the smoldering Bridgeton Landfill. Republic Services, which subsequently acquired both landfills through a merger, has spent millions of dollars to ensure that the fire and the nuclear waste don‰??t meet.

The Environmental Protection Agency‰??s remedy calls for excavating about 70 percent of the landfill‰??s radioactive waste and disposing of it out of state. The agency identified the landfill operator as one of three potentially responsible parties. Mallinckrodt was not among them, although it has been named in more than 140 federal lawsuits filed on behalf of north St. Louis County residents and heirs who claimed exposure to radioactive waste caused cancers and deaths.

URBANA ‰?? In order to get insurance to pay for injuries to a University of Illinois student who was burned by a friend during an alcohol-fueled mishap, the state will not file criminal charges against the friend.

University of Illinois police had issued Erik Beitel, 21, a senior in computer science, a notice to appear in court Thursday for possible criminal charges stemming from a Sept. 27 drinking-related accident at his fraternity.

State‰??s Attorney Julia Rietz said Wednesday she has decided not to file reckless-conduct charges against Beitel because the UI‰??s disciplinary system is dealing with him and because his parents‰?? homeowner‰??s insurance policy will not cover the victim‰??s injuries if Beitel is criminally charged.

Rietz said she‰??s been in contact with the injured student‰??s family and they also prefer that no criminal charges be filed against Beitel so that his family‰??s insurance can help with the expense of caring for their son, a 19-year-old UI freshman.

About 11 p.m. that Thursday, Champaign firefighters and UI police were called to the Kappa Delta Rho fraternity, 1110 S. Second St., C, where two young men had reportedly been burned.

A Champaign Fire Department investigative report said a group of people were in a second-floor room with Beitel, preparing to drink flaming shots of Everclear and Jagermeister.

The report said Beitel told a fire investigator he poured Jagermeister, a hard liquor, into a shot glass, then poured Everclear, a grain alcohol, on top.

CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. (KAMR/KCIT) - The United States Air Force has released its results from an inspection to determine if chemical compounds from firefighting foam used a Cannon Air Force Base is contaminating off-base drinking water supplies.

According to the Air Force Civil Engineer Center, 25 drinking water sources near the southeast corner of the installation were sampled.

Officials said they found thee locations where found where Perfluorooctane Sulfonate (PFOS) and Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) concentrations in drinking water exceeded an Environmental Protection Agency lifetime health advisory of 70 parts per trillion.

The Air Force told us they have provided alternate drinking water at those locations.

Air Force officials told us two private wells had detectable levels of PFOS/PFOA below the EPA's lifetime health advisory, and the AFCEC will continue to monitor those wells to ensure levels remain below that level.

Officials also said 20 wells did not have detectable levels of either contaminant.

Chevron will spend more than $150 million on safety upgrades throughout its domestic production network as part of a settlement reached with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, EPA officials announced today.

The settlement was reached after an investigation that was prompted initially by a 2012 chemical release at Chevron's refinery in Richmond.

An estimated 15,000 people sought medical attention after a fire at the refinery released high-temperature hydrocarbons on Aug. 6, 2012, according to the EPA.

County officials issued a shelter-in-place warning due to environmental conditions, and 19 employees were endangered as a result of the fire and chemical release.

Almost 40 years ago this week, an explosion caused by a gas leak killed six people at an Amoco chemical plant south of New Castle.

The explosion on Oct. 21, 1980, injured almost 30 people, blew pollutants into the surrounding marsh, broke windows for miles and ended the 20-year run for the Amoco plant.

The official cause of the blast was later determined to be a propylene gas leak from an improperly serviced valve. Five employees died that day, and another died in the hospital in December. Twenty-seven others were hurt.

Minister for the Environment and Food Jakob Ellemann-Jensen and Business Minister Rasmus Jarlov are to beef up legal framework against companies and suppliers who sell dangerous toys.

Rule changes will mean that complaints can be pursued whenever toys containing hazardous substances are sold, regardless of whether the seller was aware of the issue at the time of sale.

Currently, prosecution is only possible when sellers willingly sell unsafe toys.

‰??In future it will also be possible to punish companies that are slack with safety,‰?? Ellemann-Jensen said via a press statement.

‰??As such, companies will be increasingly responsible for what they sell,‰?? the minister added.

Jarlov said he expected retailers and importers of toy products to improve practice as tighter rules are introduced.

After years of urging the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to act to prevent combustible dust explosions and fires, the U.S. Chemical Safety Board is asking for feedback about the management and control of combustible dust.

Specifically, the call comes as the CSB is investigating a May 2017 explosion at the Didion Milling facility in Wisconsin, which killed five employees.

The CSB announced the ‰??Call to Action: Combustible Dust‰?? Wednesday morning. The call is out to anyone who works around dust, including inspectors and workers.

‰??With this publication, the CSB aims to spearhead actionable dialogue between industry, regulator, workforce, and others to achieve safety improvements in the management and control of combustible dust beyond regulatory promulgation,‰?? the CSB said in the announcement.

The CSB is an independent, nonregulatory agency tasked with investigating the root cause of chemical incidents. It‰??s also tasked with proposing ways to prevent future ones.

In the call to action, the CSB asks for feedback about what constitutes an acceptable dust level, as well as challenges in maintaining industry standards, among other things.

There were 281 combustible dust incidents between 1980 and 2005, according to a report released in 2006. According to CSB data, there were 105 combustible dust incidents between 2006 and 2017.
