A note of caution on the elephant's toothpaste demo: KI is a recommended catalyst for the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide solution to generate oxygen gas and water as everyone expects but some of the KI is oxidized to elemental iodine which will definitely be observed as a noxious vapor. If no food coloring is added you'll see the yellow coloration of the solution. More of a problem with higher concentrations of KI and hydrogen peroxide. The demo is pretty exothermic too. So be sure to try your recipe out ahead of time before doing this in a smaller or poorly ventilated space.

Hello All,

Our Chemistry Dept. has a community night, were they do demos. Typically, this has taken place in a lecture hall with a demonstration fume hood. Recently, our new science building came online, and the coordinator of this community night would like to do the demonstrations in a public atrium area. I'm looking to the collective group for help. Do you have a demonstration that is low hazard, but HIGH cool factor that could be an option?

If you would like to contact me offline, my email is jghamo2**At_Symbol_Here**email.uky.edu.

Thank you so much for your help.
