I love questions like this and RTECS won't get all of these.  Some are minerals and combinations of minerals in some cases.


I also forgot to mention in my review the "mason stains."   You need to look on the bag or recipe for a number, go on their website and look up the composition.  And those, you will find, are often spinels and other combinations of from 2 to 4 metals.   There is a lot of information about their stability with heat, but none have been tested for toxicity.  So the assumption was that they would not be bioavailable -- a truly unsupported theory.  It's why there were deaths from lead silicate frits that were acid insoluble, but very biolavailable on both inhalation and ingestion.  People are not acid and water. They are acid, water, bases, enzymes, heat, cellular mechanisms, and much more.  The only way to know how bioavailable these frits or the Mason Stains are is to put them in a living organisms, hopefully not one of us.

I'm sure Monona can handle that job probably better than anyone on the planet, but to save her from inundation, and FWIW, if anyone finds on doing an inspection or whatever, a container with only an archaic or trade name, you might try RTECS [The Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances].  I always figured a subscription to that was worth it for this "switchbook" function alone.

Good morning!
 
A professor in my department is developing a lab for a chemistry in art course and would like to have students mix pottery glazes (on a very small scale and for one experiment only) according to an old =E2=80=98recipe' provided by our art department.  The problem is that the names of the compounds as written in the recipe are not the actual chemical names, making it impossible to look up an SDS to research the hazards, and the art department doesn't have this information, maybe never did. They quit using the recipe because they're not set up to handle the hazards.
 
I hope some of you who are knowledgeable about pottery glazes can help me identify the real chemical names for these compounds, or point me in the right direction for doing so.  Because of the listserv's permissions, I can't attach the recipe to this email, but if you think you can help, please email me and I'll send it to you for a look.
 
I'd be grateful for any help you can give!
