Bingo. One of the main problems that we encounter often is mixing nitric acid (strong oxidizer) with organics under uncontrolled conditions (temperature, pressure, mixing components in closed systems). The number of mishaps and explosions seem to increase as of late. Caution most be exercised when working with nitric acid.

I agree with Neal. Having performed a few nitrations in my days of Process Chemistry, read the procedure very thoroughly. In addition, make sure you have the proper PPE and your fume hood is operating normally and free of clutter.

And think the steps through before you do them.

Cheers!

Bretherick is certainly the starting place, but a good search on Science Direct and SciFinder is called for. Then, before you do bench work, develop an SOP and go over it in detail with peers and SMEs.

Also we are mixing nitric acid and acetic acid and then adding the compound to be nitrate, how dangerous is the mixing of the two acids I read that they are incompatible ?
