KEARNY MESA (CNS) - Two children and two female lifeguards were treated at a hospital Saturday for exposure to chemicals in a YMCA pool.

The incident occurred about 12:30 p.m. at Toby Wells YMCA at 5105 Overland Drive, San Diego Fire Department (SDFD) PIO Maurice Luque said.

"We got a call that four people were complaining of shortness of breath and we went there and determined that the pool was too acidic," Luque said. "Apparently, there was a problem with the pool's injection system in maintaining a proper chemical balance."

Luque said the small pool was drained and the injection system was fixed before it was refilled.

Luque said a brother and sister, who were not identified, were taken to Rady's Children's Hospital for treatment. He said one female lifeguard was taken to Sharp Hospital for treatment and another was taken to Kaiser Hospital.

Fire officials say residents have been allowed to return to their homes after a chemical spill forced businesses and some houses to be evacuated.
Officials said that roughly 3,000 gallons of chemicals spilled into the tracks behind Emerald Performance Materials around 1 p.m. Saturday, forcing homes and businesses downwind from the chemical materials company to be evacuated for a couple of hours.
Capt. William Howe of the Akron Fire Department says that one employee of the company became nauseated by the fumes and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. He was in good condition.
Firefighters say that the spill was an accident.

CLARKSVILLE, Pa. ? Authorities said several dozen residents were evacuated from a Greene County personal care home Friday afternoon because of a potent chemical smell.
According to state police, a miscommunication between two workers at the Advanced Personal Care Home on Center Street in Clarksville caused the chemical reaction.
?It was a strong chemical smell that took your breath away is what they said,? owner Georgie Stotka said.
According to Stotka, he called a maintenance worker to fix a simple clogged toilet. But, the problem arose when more people tried to help.
?My brother-in-law, being a good Samaritan, tried to unclog the commode. He didn?t realize there was bleach in there and he put Drano in. It produced some chemical fumes,? Stotka said.
Stotka told Channel 11?s Cara Sapida that a 71-year-old female resident was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Brownwood ISD officials released the following statement: A small fire broke out in an unoccupied chemistry lab at Brownwood High School Friday afternoon.
The Brownwood Fire Department was contacted and the school was evacuated, though most students were already out of the building attending a pep rally.
The fire appears to have been located in a trash can inside the lab. No one was injured, and only minor damage to the trash can is reported. The Brownwood Fire Department is on the scene clearing smoke and investing the possible cause.
At the scene, Brownwood Assistant Fire Chief Grady Shuey told the Bulletin, "A teacher in a nearby class smelled smoke. She opened the door to the Chemistry Lab, saw the fire, and closed the door." Shuey said the fire had apparently started after the class had dismissed, from a reaction of chemicals disposed in the trash can,
