Avago Technologies employees were temporarily evacuated from the company?s Fort Collins campus Monday following a ?minor? chemical spill.

Poudre Fire Authority crews responded to report of hydrochloric acid spilling from a basin about 9:20 a.m. Monday but arrived at 4380 Ziegler Road to find the company?s safety team already had the situation ?under control,? PFA spokesman Patrick Love said.

Avago?s safety team handled ?minor? evacuations, Love said, and conducted air monitoring tests.

Love said there were no reported injuries and no threat to anyone outside the company, which designs and develops a range of analog, mixed signal and optoelectronic components and systems, according to its website.

FACTORIES in Carole Park have been destroyed in a massive chemical blaze believed to be sparked by nearby grass fire.

More than 20 crews responded to the out-of-control building fire occupied by Viscount Plastics at Cobalt St on Sunday, about 3.15pm.

Support was called from Brisbane units, including Inala, to help extinguish the flames which spread to the adjoining property.

Police closed Cobalt St and nearby roads as large plumes of black smoke billowed hundreds of metres into the air over Springfield and Camira.

There were a couple of police cars in front of the brick house four doors away from Ron Patterson?s as he and his wife drove by, but he didn?t pay them much mind. After he left again, his wife called: fire trucks had shown up.

Patterson, a 25-year volunteer with the Wilmington Manor Fire Department, put two and two together. ?I kind of knew what was going on,? he said. ?Just from what she was telling me ... I was like, ?Well, it sounds like a meth lab to me.??

It was. In May, a 25-year-old neighbor of the Pattersons was arrested after New Castle County police uncovered a methamphetamine lab operating in the man?s bedroom.

?It was shocking,? said Patterson, 40. ?We grew up here. I?ve known the father since I was a kid.?

Patterson said he didn?t feel threatened. But his neighbor did. ?It could catch fire,? said Fred Maldonado, 68. ?I was surprised. I thought meth labs needed a lot of room.?

HazMat crews responded to a Kroger in Virginia Beach Tuesday night after an employee mixed cleaning chemicals, according to Battalion Chief Ken Pravetz with the Virginia Beach Fire Department.

Just before 10 p.m., emergency communications received a call from the Kroger Marketplace in the 3300 block of Virginia Beach Boulevard about an employee feeling ill after mixing cleaning chemicals.

The building was evacuated, and one person was transported to a hospital with respiratory difficulty, but should be okay. Two others were being evaluated by medics at the scene, but were not transported.

Pravetz said a HazMat team responded to the scene to investigate the incident. He said they would be on scene until about 11:30 p.m.

A BRR Refrigeration worker was doing contracted work inside the Kroger when the incident occurred. He told WAVY.com he saw the Kroger employee mixing the chemicals before beginning to clean and continued to work even though his nose was bleeding. He said there was a strong chemical smell inside the store.

CHEMICAL SAFETY BOARD SHUTTERED

If a chemical plant or refinery blew up today, no federal investigators would be rushing to the site to determine the cause.
Along with most of the rest of the federal government, the Chemical Safety & Hazard Investigation Board is ?effectively shut down,? says Daniel Horowitz, CSB managing director. All but three CSB employees have been furloughed?Horowitz, CSB?s general counsel, and an information technology specialist.
?If a large incident were to occur,? Horowitz says, ?we would confer with the Office of Management & Budget about the potential recall of investigators from furlough. However, that would be a difficult prospect at best, since the entire administrative side of our house is closed.?

FAIRFIELD -- The owner of a Bronson Road property where the discovery last week of a large collection of weapons and chemicals -- and, police said, explosive materials -- triggered a hazmat emergency was arrested Monday afternoon.

Joseph C. Callahan, 69, of 1625 Bronson Road, was charged with 11 counts of illegal possession of explosives, one count of manufacturing bombs and six counts of first-degree reckless endangerment.

A conditional promise to appear in court was issued in lieu of bond. Terms of his release are to cooperate with authorities to remediate his property, police said. He is scheduled to appear Oct. 16 at state Superior Court in Bridgeport.

Callahan is cooperating with the continuing investigation, police said, as well as the remediation of chemicals and other materials on his property by offering to take steps to safely mitigate potential problems. That cooperation extends to authorizing the removal and disposal of any chemicals that the fire marshal's office and the state Department of Energy and Enviromental Protection deem hazardous, officials said.

FIRE AT DRDO LAB, ONE MAGAZINE GUTTED

fire broke out in one of the magazines of the Defence Research and Development Organisation?s lab in Chandipur area of coastal Balasore district on Monday morning. The blaze was contained within three hours by 14 fire tenders. More than 12 hours later, more explosions occurred at the same magazine following which six fire tenders rushed to the site to control the fire.
The second explosion in the magazine, which started at around 8 pm, was contained after 45 minutes. No one was injured in the explosions.
The first fire, broke out in one of the 21 magazines of Proof and Experimental Establishment in Chandipur, the oldest laboratory of DRDO around 4 am. ?The explosion left all explosives in the magazine completely gutted. However, the roof of the magazine was intact. Only the doors were ripped apart,? said PXE Director R Appavuraj. The rest 20 magazines in PXE were unaffected by the explosion. Appavuraj said more than a dozen firefighters took three hours to bring the fire under control.
The incident triggered panic among people in Chandipur and nearby areas. ?We woke up due to the noise. We were scared and initially thought there was a powerful bomb explosion,? said a local resident.
Appavuraj said it?s not yet clear how the magazine housed in a RCC structure caught fire. ?There are no electrical wirings in the building. Whether it was due to lightning or some chemical decomposition, we an only tell after an inquiry,? he said.
