2013 ACS NERM Announces Special Program Sessions and Speakers
Special Sessions Include:
- Dr. Donna Nelson, technical adviser to the Emmy Award-winning television series "Breaking Bad," as the keynote speaker, Thursday night October 24, 2013. A proponent of scientific accuracy in television and film, Dr. Nelson will discuss her role and experiences as a technical adviser to a television show which includes chemistry. "Breaking Bad" is the story of a struggling high school chemistry teacher who is diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. He turns to a life of crime, producing and selling methamphetamine with the aim of securing his family's financial future before he dies.
- Advancing Graduate Education in the Chemical Sciences Organized by Professor Paul Houston (Georgia Tech). Professor Bassam Shakhashiri (former ACS President) will be a speaker for this session.
- Nitrogen Heterocycles: A Tribute to the Pioneer of Pyrimidine Chemistry This session is dedicated to Treat B. Johnson, Yale's Sterling Professor of Chemistry, appointed in 1928. Speakers include Professor Jonathan Ellman (Yale University), Professor Andr=E9 Charette (Universit=E9 de Montr=E9al), Professor Bruce Arndtsen (McGill University) and Professor Corey Stephenson (University of Michigan).
- Phosphodiesterases as Drug Targets for CNS Disorders
- Synthesis and Application of Isotopically Labeled Molecule
- Safety in the Chemical Laboratory (see agenda below)
