The University of Texas at Austin is seeking a Senior Laboratory Safety Specialist.

 

Purpose of Position: To provide professional knowledge and expertise in the operation and support of laboratory safety programs and ensure compliance with regulatory agency guidelines and institutional policies. Responsible for the coordination and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure a safe and healthy working environment.

 

Essential Functions: Perform inspections of high priority laboratories to assess health and safety conditions. Work with lab personnel regarding necessary corrective actions. Consult with faculty, research staff, and students to ensure compliance with safety regulations and institutional policies and procedures. Provide expertise for highly specialized hazardous materials and operations in labs such as facility design, handling procedures for hazardous materials, and occupational exposure issues. Develop and conduct educational programs relating to hazardous operations in labs. Perform incident response and accident investigations and complete necessary reports. Develop standard operating procedures and other written guidelines for hazardous materials/operations in research facilities.

 

Required qualifications: Master's degree in natural science, environmental science or related field or a bachelor's degree in chemistry. Two years of experience in environmental, health and safety or related experience with a master's degree and four years of experience in environmental, health and safety or related experience with a bachelor's degree. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Chemistry degree. PhD in Chemistry, or less favorably, another closely related major. Experience in a university setting, work experience in chemistry laboratory settings, experience performing inspections or audits, experience working with chemicals.

 

Monthly Salary:  $4,167 (negotiable depending on qualifications)
