Cambridge =97
Two MIT dormitories were evacuated at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, after
private contractors working on the third floor on the New House dorm on
Memorial Drive found two pipes, both filled with ball bearings and a
granular material, laid out next to a tub of chemicals.

The surrounding area was cordoned off, but a six-and-a-half hour
investigation that involved the MIT Police Department, Cambridge Fire
Department, Boston State Police, the Cambridge Bomb Squad, FBI and ATF
agents, a HAZMAT unit, high-powered water cannons and sniffer dogs,
ended when officials declared that the potential bomb was a =93collection
of harmless materials.=94

Police department spokesman Dan Riviello said that an abundance of
=93suspicious material=94 warranted a full response.

Nine students were evacuated from New House, and the adjacent Next House
facility was cleared after 11 a.m. Police blocked off a small
surrounding area, which incorporated Amherst Alley and a neighboring car
park.

Around 12 p.m. the Boston Police Department=92s Twitter page had
referred to the package as a =93possible pipe bomb.=94

(Reuters) - Thousands of people in eastern China are without tap water
after a spill from a factory may have dumped toxic chemicals into a
river, state media said on Wednesday.

The spill comes just a week after the Environment Ministry said one in
six major Chinese rivers are so polluted the water is unfit even for
farmland.

The factory in the wealthy province of Zhejiang is suspected of
contaminating the Tiaoxi River with chemicals including benzene and
alkene, the official Xinhua news agency cited a government statement as
saying.

"The pollution has disrupted the operation of two downstream water
treatment facilities and affected tap water supplies in Hangzhou's
Yuhang district, which has a population of about 848,400," Xinhua said.

Two water treatment plants in the towns of Pingyao and Liangzhu stopped
working on Sunday because of the spill and have not restarted, the
report added.

A two-alarm fire and a hazardous material call brought about 50
firefighters and 14 pieces of equipment Tuesday afternoon to a burning
chemical plant in Marietta.

The fire was reported shortly after 2 p.m. at Sinergy Elastomers Inc., a
producer of waterproofing materials at 922 Mountain Industrial Drive NW
near White Circle Drive in Marietta. The building is in an industrial
park at the base of Kennesaw Mountain.

...
The blaze began when hot waterproofing chemical spilled from a mixing
barrel and ignited the propane tank of a nearby forklift, Boyd said.

Intel Corp. (INTC), the world=92s largest chipmaker, said a fire in a
chemical storage building injured seven people at its plant in Chandler,
Arizona.
Four people were hospitalized, one with serious injuries, said Bill
Calder, a spokesman for Intel. While one building -- called Fab 32 --
was evacuated as a precaution, there was no effect on production, Calder
said.
Intel plants, which are largely automated, churn out hundreds of
millions of chips a year and run 24 hours a day. The multibillion-dollar
factories are most vulnerable to power outages, which can disrupt a
manufacturing process that takes up to three months from start to
finish, as recently seen in damage to facilities in Japan caused by the
earthquake and tsunami.

An unidentified man was severely injured today while working at a
northwest side business. The victim was transported by CareFlight to
Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, after falling into a vat of
caustic soda at Levi Holdings, Richmond Fire Department Battalion Chief
Jerry Purcell said.

The heroic actions of a co-worker saved the man=92s life, Purcell added.
That co-worker was transported to Reid Hospital for treatment of burns
on his hand and arm. Neither man was identified Tuesday by RFD.

The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. at the tanker cleaning business,
1655 Rich Road.

According to Purcell, the man who fell into the vat suffered
third-degree burns over 60 to 70 percent of his body and was taken to
Miami Valley for treatment.

A special disposal team was called in from California to remove
hazardous waste that was discovered and contained Tuesday afternoon by
Yuma firefighters.

Fire Inspector Kayla Holiman said the Yuma Fire Department responded to
a medical call at 2130 W. 24th Street shortly before 1:00 p.m. While
they were on scene, she said firefighters noticed an unknown substance
leaking from a the trailer of a semi truck that was parked in the same
parking lot.

Holiman said a YFD Engine Company was called to the scene and found that
a 270-gallon tote container was leaking a unknown corrosive liquid.

The YFD's Hazardous Materials Team then responded and contacted CHEMTREC
(a national chemical data base for emergency response procedures). The
liquid was later identified as sodium potassium carbonate, which is a
cleaning solution.

=93It poses an inhalation and absorption hazard,=94 Holiman said. =93It
is also corrosive to metal.=94

Emergency management and fire personnel were called to the 800 block of
Rogers Road in Villa Hills after an auctioneer discovered a box labeled
"Cyno Gas" while preparing for an estate auction.

The hazmat team discovered a corroding can of calcium cyanide - as well
as arsenic, malathion and other poisons once used as herbicides and
insecticides - in the garage. They sealed all the items in hazmat
containers.

Larry Chaney, owner of Elite Estate Group, said he found the container
in a locked box on a shelf in the garage while going through items for
an estate auction. "It was well hidden," he said.

He said the lock on the box had a key in it, and when he opened it, he
found a sealed cardboard box marked "poison." He left the garage and
called 911.

GARDEN GROVE - A hazardous-materials team was called to a Garden Grove
neighborhood Monday night after an "acid-type substance" was poured in
the area in what police suspect to be a suicide attempt.
Residents reported a "weird smell" near a vehicle belonging to a
20-year-old woman who was staying with them and within their home in the
12200 block of Lampson Avenue just before 7:30 p.m., Garden Grove police
Sgt. Doug Pluard said.

The residents entered the home to see if they could find the woman, who
they reportedly hadn't seen in a day, but they were unable to contact
her and called police, Pluard said.
Authorities closed portions of Lampson and Buaro Street as the
investigated the smell. Nearby residents were advised to stay in their
homes.
Shortly before 9:30 p.m., a hazardous materials team determined that the
smell was from an "acid-type" substance, possibly one used in pool
cleaners, Pluard said.

MICROWAVE CAUSES TWO-ALARM FIRE AT CHEMICAL PLANT IN HARRISON

A two-alarm fire broke out at a chemical plant in Harrison earlier this
morning, officials said.
At 6:07 a.m., an employee at the GEO Specialty Chemicals plant, located
at 1st and Essex streets, called 9-1-1 and reported a microwave fire,
said Fire Chief Thomas Dolaghan.
The worker tried repeatedly to put out the fire, but was unable to,
Dolaghan said. Fortunately, firefighters led by Dolaghan and Captain
John Mulrennan were able to get the fire under control within 27 minutes
of reporting to the scene, he said.
The fire took place in a 20 by 20 foot laboratory which the company was
vacating, Dolaghan said, adding that the fire originated from a
convection oven used to heat sample chemicals.
The fire was not suspicious and appears to have been electrical in
nature, Dolaghan said.
Units from Kearny and East Newark also reported to the scene, Dolaghan
said.
Hudson Regional Health Commission inspectors came to the plant, which
makes paper lubricants and water repellent, and determined that there
were no hazardous conditions, Dolaghan said.
