The Los Angeles Fire Department responded at 2:31 p.m. to a report of an "unknown chemical spill" in the Biomedical Sciences Research Building, city fire spokesman Devin Gales said.

Three facilities workers who reported feeling nauseous were treated at the scene, according to UCLA officials, and about 200 people were safely evacuated from the building.

South Charles E. Young Drive was closed between Tiverton Drive and Westholme Avenue.

STREETS BACK OPEN AFTER HAZMAT INVESTIGATION, http://www.k olotv.com/home/headlines/114676199.html

< /div>

  ;

SPARKS - Streets are back open in the Coney Island area after Wednesday's hazmat incident.

  ;

Officials say a barrel of nitric acid began to smoke for unknown reasons when it was moved into a plastic barrel.

  ;

Advanced Composite Technologies uses the chemical in production, and hired H20 Environmental to dispose of the chemical waste.

  ;

Fully-suit ed hazmat teams had to siphon the chemical out of the barrel and dilute it with water.

  ;

Nitric acid can be a dangerous chemical.

  ;

"It's an industrial grade nitric acid. If it got onto your skin, it would cause severe burns. It can cause a lot of reactions with a lot of different chemicals," said Tom Garrison, Sparks Fire Department.

  ;

Teams were able to mitigate the situation without incident.

  ;

The chemical is still in several barrels at Advanced Composite Technologies. H20 Environmental wil return to the scene Thursday morning to finish the removal.

FBI REMOVES SUSPECTED HAZARDOUS MATERIAL FROM COVENTRY TOWNSHIP HOME | CLEVELAND.COM, http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/01/fbi_remove_suspected_ hazardous.html

  ;

COVENTRY TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Federal agents seized a small amount of a suspected hazardous material from a South Main Street home late Tuesday afternoon.

FBI spokesman Scott Wilson said the substance, which could be lethal, was flown to a federal laboratory in Maryland for analysis. He declined to comment on published reports that the substance is believed to be ricin, a deadly powder that can be produced from castor beans.

Wilson said the material was taken from a home on South Main Street near Firestone Metro Park that recently had been foreclosed. The new owner called police with concerns that a hazardous material was in the house. Agents called in specially trained FBI hazardous materials teams from Pittsburgh and Quantico, Va., Wilson said.

South Main Street was closed near Vaughn Road as the Summit County Sheriff's Office and local firefighters waited for the team's arrival. Homes and businesses in the neighborhood were not evacuated.

The agents, wearing hazmat suits, arrived at 3 p.m. and searched the home.
