Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service helped respond to a
hazardous materials incident at the Mission Recreation Centre in the
7600 block of Grant Street Thursday at 11:30 a.m. after a request from
Mission Fire Rescue.
The incident involved an ammonia leak and saw crews
entered the structure to locate and stop the contamination from
spreading. Abbotsford Deputy Fire Chief Ron Hull said in a release that
this is not the first time the Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service has
responded to a request from Mission.

HINCKLEY,
Ohio - Hazmat crews responded to the ALDI Supermarket distribution
center in Medina County Tuesday morning after a strange smell was
reported.
Police were called to the center in Hinckley. The
company said no employees were present at this time, nor was anyone sick
or choking -- but people at the plant told NewsChannel5 that the smell
was so strong that it made some of them feel sick, even choking
them.
Police and fire crews responded to the scene, and
hazmat officials said that the smell was the result of a refrigeration
unit that broke. Once the unit broke, it began releasing ammonia into
the air.
The ALDI distribution center houses the frozen food
for the supermarket chain, and the one of the large refrigeration units
is what broke.
Crews on the scene said that the area is now safe, and
technicians are working to repair the refrigerator. Hazmat crews
remained at the scene for some time to ventilate the building and remove
fumes from the ammonia.

The
Bainbridge Hazmat Team was called out on Sunday to a fuel spill at the
Sharber Oil Terminal on Whigham Dairy Road.
General Manager Greg Waddell stated that at about
lunchtime a hose disconnected from one of the main storage tanks at the
facility. A customer alerted the company and a cut off valve was
shut to stop the flow. Mr Waddell stated about 400 gallons of fuel
spilled and drained into a ditch along the road.
Hazmat
and Decatur County Fire responded and contained the area. Greg
Waddell stated that EPA had been notified and a contracted clean up crew
was already on their way to complete the cleanup.

WICKLIFFE -- Officials at
Lubrizol's facility here said that a "short duration release of
nitrogen dioxide occurred" about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. The release
took place in the pilot plant on the West Campus while equipment
was being cleaned.
Officials
say no one was injured and there is no immediate danger to the public
living near the plant.
Lubrizol, working with the Wickliffe Fire Department,
is now in clean-up mode.

CHEYENNE -- Emergency operations ceased Monday night
at the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation building when a
department chemist deemed the explosive chemical discovered there to be
stable and of no danger to the community at its current
location.
An explosive ordnance disposal team and fire/hazardous
material experts responded to the building at on West 22nd Street at 2
p.m. Monday when a gallon container of crystallized picric acid was
discovered in the State Crime Lab. It was thought to be highly
explosive, and several downtown buildings were
evacuated.

DALTON =97
A cloud of dust caused by a small chemical spill led authorities to
evacuate a plant and shut down streets in a half-mile radius around the
Industrial Park plant on Monday around lunchtime.
The
mishap at Marktec =97 a company that manufactures countertop glues =97
occurred around 11:30 a.m., according to Whitfield 911. But by 1 p.m.
authorities had given an =93all clear=94 and units from the Dalton Fire
and Police Departments began demobilizing from the scene. Spokesman
Bruce Frazier said two people were taken to Hamilton Medical Center to
be treated for skin irritation. Nearby Dalton Wrecker Service was also
evacuated briefly, he said.

HINCKLEY
- Fire personnel from the township along with the Brunswick Fire
Department responded to a chemical leak at 2 a.m. today at the Aldi
distribution center, 1319 W. 130th St.
"We were
there for calls of a chemical smell in the air," said Brunswick
Assistant Fire Chief Rick Barber. "As I understand from Lt. Matt Payne,
who was on scene, there was an ammonia spill. They use the ammonia in
refrigeration tanks at the distribution facility. =46rom what I
understand, there was a malfunction of a valve causing the ammonia to
spill out."

spokesperson for Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue told Mix96 "Tuesday 16
November, 11.50am: Chemical incident - fumes given off following
spillage of one litre container of nitric acid, Picts Lane, Princes
Risborough. One appliance and crew from Princes Risborough and one from
Aylesbury attended, along with the OSU (Operational Support Unit) from
Great Missenden and the SEV (Specialist Equipment Vehicle) from
Aylesbury.Firefighters used four sets of breathing apparatus,
two gas-tight suits, one hose reel, sand and brushes to
contain the spill and decontaminate the area. One man was taken to
hospital suffering from the effects of breathing
in fumes."

About 50
people had to be evacuated after a vehicle accidentally dropped
commercial pesticide onto U.S. 29, causing a potentially dangerous toxic
gas to form over the area.
At about 11:40 a.m. Tuesday, Danville police, fire and
emergency services, as well as the hazardous materials team, responded
to an area near the intersection of U.S. 58 and 29, where a pickup truck
lost some of its load of magnesium phosphide, a chemical that fumes a
toxic gas when combined with water.
Crews immediately isolated
the area, and evacuated downwind residents for about a half-mile near
Eastwood Drive and Kent Street.

A natural
gas well blew out Sunday night in Frio County, sending a plumes
of water gushing into the air. A hazardous materials crew was
monitoring the smelly situation Monday.
Officials are asking residents of a Pearsall mobile
home park to voluntarily evacutate the area that sits about a
quarter mile from the site.
A nearby
resident said she heard a big boom at about 9 p.m. Sunday. The air
smells like rotten eggs, Trudy Alvarez said, and although she was told
at first to evacuate her home, she later was told it would be OK to
stay.

DALTON,
GA. (WRCB)-- Monday's rain was a nuisance for firefighters in Dalton,
who spent the afternoon cleaning up a chemical spill.
The spill
forced one local business to evacuate and shut down a portion of Needham
Road.
Fire officials have given the all clear for employees
of Marktec to return to work.
Marktec Manufacturing is known for making glues and
resins used in countertops.
It was one of the chemicals used in that process that
spilled, shutting down three blocks.
"It's like a rubber burning
smell," says Priscilla Luna.

FRANKLIN, Ohio -- A fire
that happened inside an industrial building in Franklin has been ruled
accidental.
The fire happened just after
1:30 a.m. at Cast Plus on Oxford Road early last
Thursday.
Franklin=92s fire chief said
the fire started from a chemical reaction in a filter from a maintenance
shop and paint area.

Several Buffalo firefighters who responded to a
basement fire at the Pearl Street Brewery in downtown this morning were
examined at Erie County Medical Center as a precautionary
measure.
It was thought at first that they were exposed to
fumes from cleaning fluid that had a toxic reaction to a chemical in a
fire extinguisher, but the jugs containing the acid-based liquid were
not compromised, according to Fire Division Chief Donald
Feely.
A small fire occurred in the basement of the
restaurant, 76 Pearl St., shortly before 10 a.m. when two cardboard
boxes holding the jugs started on fire. A hazmat situation was declared,
and the building was temporarily evacuated.

Chemical
fire
A 25th anniversary celebration almost wiped out our
200-year history at the Fiji Museum on Friday night. A fiery dance group
of teenaged girls and boys were performing a fire-dance when kerosene
they were using spilt on to the floor and burst into flames in front of
guests as well as the Ra Marama replica that stood not more than 15
metres away. The dancers attempted putting the fire out with water but
induced the "chemical fire". Intoxicated guests rushed in and helped put
the fire out.

KENNETT =97
A hobbyist mixing rocket fuel was killed Saturday when the chemicals
exploded.
James McGovern, 22, of the 300 block of East
Hillendale Road, in Kennett, was experimenting with homemade rocket fuel
when the blast occurred, said state police from
Avondale.
McGovern was a May graduate in chemical engineering
from the University of Delaware, according to friends. He had a
long-standing interest in rockets and propulsion.
State
police said he was in the front yard of the home he shared with his
parents when the incident occurred about 4:35 p.m. He was not launching
a rocket at the time.

Thiruvananthapuram, 15th Nov: Children in selected schools in
the district will soon be trained to handle emergency situations like
natural disasters and accidents, under a project launched by the
departments of revenue and education.
The
School Safety Project will equip students with basic lessons in tackling
a fire outbreak, an accident in a chemical laboratory, a building
collapse or even a bomb threat or hostage crisis. It is aimed at making
schools self-sufficient, relying on their own resources to protect and
care for the students until external assistance is
available.
The project involves setting up safety clubs in
schools, creating emergency preparedness and response plans,
constitution of disaster management teams and preparing school safety
literature. The pilot project will cover 50 schools in the district.
Designed to place school safety on the education agenda and promote
awareness on disaster management, the project is part of a nation-wide
programme initiated by the Government of India and
UNDP.

FIREFIGHTERS were called to a chemical spillage at a
printing firm in Pinvin on Saturday night.
Hereford
and Worcester fire and rescue service went to Polestar Varnicoat,
Station Road, Pinvin, at around 11pm after reports of a spillage of the
solvent, toluene, mixed with water within the building and
outside.
While staff from Polestar pumped the chemical into
storage tanks, fire crews were on hand with foam jets in case of
fire.

Firefighters responding to a Sohier Road business yesterday morning
found a chemical tank smoldering next to a 55-gallon drum of hazardous
materials that included a chemical with small amounts of
cyanide.
"At no time was there any significant threat to the
public," said a statement from the Fire Department, which responded to
Communications and Power Industries at 10:03 a.m. "Facility systems and
emergency response plans assisted the Fire Department in the quick
mitigation of the incident."
Crews put out the fire, what looked like a puddle of
burning plastic, with a dry chemical fire extinguisher. They noticed the
container was damaged and left the building, said Deputy Chief Peter
O'Connor said.
