It=27s not clear that the instructor was using sodium bicarbonate to neu
tralize
the chemical on his/her body, but that=27s the way I read it (the writ
er could
have meant that the instructor was using sodium bicarb to neutralize the
 spilled
acid on the floor).  Assuming that=27s the case, one has to wonder h
ow much less
severe the instructor=27s burns would have been had he flushed with copi
ous
amounts of water instead.

=3E wounded at about 2 p.m. on February 28 when 500 ml of nitric aci

=3E spilled onto his wrist, forearm, thigh, and knee, according 
to a  

=3E police spokeswoman. When firefighters arrived at the third-floor  

=3E chemistry lab in the multipurpose classroom building on the west

=3E of campus, the instructor had already begun using sodium

=3E to neutralize the chemical. He was taken to Saint Alphonsus 

=3E Regional  

=3E Medical Center for burn treatment. About 60 people, including tw
