Gingivitis

Definition

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gum tissue. This is a reversible gum disease.

Additional Info

Symptoms include gum bleeding without pain. As the disease progresses, pain, swelling, and loss of bone around the teeth may occur. Advanced gum disease can cause the loss of otherwise healthy teeth.

Make sure you follow good oral hygiene (brushing and flossing regularly) and see your dentist on a regular basis.

SDS Relevance

This term occasionally appears in Section 11 (toxicological information) of Safety Data Sheets as a symptom of exposure to chemicals that can cause inflammation of the gums. Examples include cytotoxic chemotherapy drugs. Avoid contact with these materials. Certain occupations, particularly those which involve work outdoors or in hot weather, are likely to lead to dehydration which, in turn, can contribute to gum disease.
