We require undergraduates to wear 100% cotton lab coats in all teaching labs, available in the bookstore. There are a couple of experiments in upper division teaching labs which require an FR coat. It's part
of their risk assessment before the lab. Otherwise, they wear 100% cotton.
The Teaching Assistants wear 100% FR-treated light blue coats, to distinguish them from the students. The FR treatment was serendipitous -they asked for blue and I could only get blue 100% cotton coats with
the FR treatment.
The bookstore takes coats for recycling (we pre-sort, tossing the really grungy and damaged). We've worked with the bookstore and our laundry service to launder and resell coats. The blue TA coats are laundered
through the department laundry contract.

Subject: [DCHAS-L] Required Use of Lab Coats in Undergraduate Chemistry Teaching Labs
All,
I am trying to find any information regarding the requirement of the use of a lab coat by students in general chemistry labs vs. upper level courses such as organic, advance lab, inorganic, etc. Does ACS have recommendations/guidelines
to that end? What are some of your experiences at your institutions? Thank you in advance.
