COVINGTON, Ga. -- I
nvestigators are trying to figure out who deliberately left behind a white p
owdery substance at a Newton County plant. Now, nearly a dozen people are si
ck.
Ten people f
rom the Pure Talk battery company are recovering at the Newton Medical Cente
r. Police said all 10 are being decontaminated after being exposed to a whit
e powder around 2:30 a.m. Investigators said one of the employees at the company receive
d a box full of cellphone batteries and two of the batteries were fused toge
ther. They said the employee tried to separate the batteries and a white pow
der was released.
Nine other employees were exposed to the powder, investigators said.
Those employees started c
omplaining of burning eyes, burning skin and numbness in their hands, accord
ing to authorities.
Police said the employees drove themselves to the Newton Medical Center e
mergency room where they are currently being treated.
Convington police said there was a not
e attached to the box, leading them to believe this was a deliberate act.

A mobile meth lab discovered Thursday morning by a Council o
f Aging employee led to the decontamination of the facility=E2=80=99s employ
ees and two hospitalized, said Lt. Jeremy Robshaw, public information office
r of St. Johns County Fire Rescue.
Public Information Officer Kevin Kelshaw of the S
t. Johns County Sheriff=E2=80=99s Office said a woman driving a Council of A
ging bus picked up a duffle bag on the way to the facility in assumption tha
t a person forgot the bag at a stop.
The woman took the duffle bag to the Council o
f Aging facility where another employee opened the bag and realized the dang
er of the contents.
Once the chemicals in the bag began to give the employees h
ead aches, they notified the St. Johns County Sheriff=E2=80=99s Office.
The S
t. Johns County Sheriff=E2=80=99s Office determined that the duffle bag cont
ained a mobile meth lab, Kelshaw said.

QUINCY, Mass. -- A bottle bomb went off on a front p
orch in Quincy. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but now police looking into si
milar incidents that might be connected.
A man inside his apartment heard his doorbe
ll ring, and just before he opened up there was a loud explosion. Luckily th
e 60-year-old wasn't hurt.
Officers found the remnants of a bottle bomb - a two-lit
er bottle of Sprite blown to bits.
"They found a couple of materials such as the so
da bottle, and some pieces of metal that they believe were part of the devic
e that exploded, and the officers describes a smell - some sort of a chemica
l smell,=" said Lt. Jack Sullivan of the Quincy Police Department.
Police s
ay just before the man answered his door, he looked out his window and saw a
couple of people standing out there, but he was unable to identify them.

A good Samaritan was overcome by chemical fu
mes while trying to help two men and two children escape from a methamphetam
ine lab explosion Friday, according to the Franklin County Sheriff's Departm
ent.
The woman w
as driving along Highway V in Washington around 12:30 p.m. when sh
e saw the men running away from the fire with a 4-month-old and 3-year-old i
n their arms, said Sgt. Jason Grellner. The chemical odor coming from the home forced the woma
n back to her car, where she called 911. She also saw three more explosions i
nside the home, which was about 1 1/2 miles from the sheriff's headquarters,
Grellner said.

Police say they have found items consistent with a drug laboratory
at the site of an explosion in Millendon last night.
A 48-year-old man was taken t
o hospital with serious burns after the blast, which happened on the Great N
orthern Highway about 9.30pm.
A Fire and Emergency Services Authority spokesma
n said firefighters were called to a chemical fire in a large shed caused by
the explosion.
He said the blaze was extinguished before firefighters arrived but
still caused about $20,000 damage.
The injured man suffered severe burns to his b
ack and is in the intensive care unit in hospital this morning.
Police say they al
so found a hydroponic set-up and a stolen motorcycle at the property.

A chemical explosion at B
radley University's Olin Hall, 827 Elmwood, left no injuries Tuesday.
Police and fi
refighters responding to a fire alarm in the building found a cloud of white
dust in the lab. The explosion caused a form of ether to dissipate around t
he room.
Officials cleared the building, ventilated and secured the area. A hazar
dous materials contamination area was set in place inside the lab.
The lab was loc
ked down until it could be decontaminated and the building was reopened. Two
students were in the lab at the time of the explosion but no injuries were r
eported.

llied Waste officials to stop accepting that type of special waste four year
s ago at its facilities, including Middle Point Landfill.
Middle Point, located of
f Jefferson Pike in the Walter Hill community just north of Murfreesboro, ha
sn't sustained any fires caused by waste such as salt cake and bag house dus
t, nor do officials believe there is a threat of fire.
But it recently experience
d elevated temperatures at one spot on the landfill, which was reported to t
he state.
"Middle Point stopped accepting aluminum processing waste in 2007 as we b
ecame aware of the potential oxidation issues," said John Doyen, general man
ager of the landfill.
Since reporting the problem to the state March 28, Allie
d Waste is operating Middle Point under a consent order from the Tennessee D
ivision of Solid Waste requiring it to take special steps to manage and cont
rol the toxic substance.

day, flushing out the source of a strong odour of gas come from the sewers.<

revention officer John Lee says the problem was traced to the paint plant, w
here runoff waste became clogged in the sewers.
A hazardous materials crew flushed
more than 470,000 litres of water down the sewers to reduce the gas levels,
Lee said.
He said recent heavy rainfall forced the gasoline odours to rise. A vacu
um truck was to be brought in to clean up the runoff. Minivan production was
n't interrupted and the gas did not pose a threat to safety, Lee said.

Three ambulances were requested to the scene of the

The Sylmar alternative-energy business dest
royed by a thunderous explosion Tuesday lacked permits to handle hazardous m
aterials and had close ties to a Simi Valley company where a similar blast k
illed a worker last year.
Off-duty firefighter Timothy B. Larson, whose brother di
ed in the June 2010 blast, was critically injured Tuesday when a tank contai
ning volatile hydrogen exploded at the company owned by his father. He was b
eing treated after reportedly losing an arm and leg.
The explosion also critically i
njured consultant William Stehl, 66, scheduled to be tried in New York state
next month on federal charges related to a green energy fraud scheme.
Stehl was a
lso present at the Simi Valley explosion at Realm Industries. That company w
as also owned by the elder Timothy A. Larson, whose 28-year-old son Tyson wa
s killed.
The fireless detonation at 4:20 p.m. Tuesday ripped the roof o
ff the 7,400-square-foot Rainbow of Hope in Sylmar, throwing both men into a
n alley.
It also blew out its doors and windows, damaging cars and businesses nex
t door and raining debris across an industrial park north of the 210 Freeway

ve. occurred as workers hovered by two pressurized, 8-foot tanks used to
extract hydrogen from water.
"At the time, it looked like they were transferring

HA, whose worker safety investigators joined local firefighters to probe thr
ough the 7,400-square-foot blast site.

LOWELL =E2=80=94 Excavators began pushing the shell of the fr
ont part of Rieter Automotive onto itself at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday&
nbsp;in an effort to extinguish what was left of the blaze that gutted the f
ormer auto parts plant.
At one point early in the blaze flames shot a couple stories i
nto the air as firefighters on four ladder trucks shot streams into the burn
ing building. A portion of the wall on the east side of the structure collap
sed onto the CSX railroad tracks. Trains were rerouted shortly after the fir
e began, according to officials.
Jim Watkins, who had worked for Rieter for 28 years
, was one of 12 workers for BRT Indiana LLC inside the building when the fir
e started shortly before noon. All 12 of the workers escaped uninjured.
He said he
was part of a construction crew working for the new owner =E2=80=94 De Pere
, Wis.-based trucking company WEL Companies Inc. =E2=80=94 to scrap the mate
rials inside the structure before parts of it were to be razed. WEL purchase
d the building about a month ago. A portion of the building was expected to b
e used as a warehouse. They were about a month into the job.
"We were just bu
rning some metal and it caught on fire and went up through the roof,="
Watkins said.

Firefighters from all across McMinn County w
ere called to a large furniture fire in Riceville early Wednesday morning.
In
all, ten different stations helped battle a blaze at McDonalds Custom Cabin
ets and Furniture on Highway 11. Owner Bryan McDonald said the fire st
arted around 9:15 a.m.
He said one of the store's employees were working with
a flammable chemical in the spray room. The material, which the store
often uses, somehow caught flame and burnt down the rest of the building, a
ccording to McDonald.
"It was like a matchstick," he said. "When it [the fire] went
, there was nothing to stop it."

HYDERABAD: Two workers were burnt aliv
e while six others suffered serious injuries in a major fire in a chemical f
actory close to Ongole town in Prakasam district in the late hours of Tuesda
y. Tension prevailed at the factory on Wednesday when the workers and locals
staged protests demanding action against the management for its negligence.
Ramanaiah and Prasad were charred to death in the fire in Bhagiratha chemic
al factory at Vengamukkapalem near Ongole. While the management claimed that
the fire was caused by an electric short-circuit, workers said there was a p
roblem in the safety valve. "Negligence on the part of the management led to
the death of two workers," they alleged.
