June 28, 2021

Join us for a special Wednesday Edition of SCHB Happy Hour this week in lieu of our usual Friday Happy Hour due to the upcoming holiday weekend. What do we think of when we mention Independance Day? Fireworks, of course! SCHB and CHAS members John Palmer and Brenda Wong will host this 'Pyro Happy Hour' on Wednesday June 30, 2021 at 7pm ET.

The goal of this Happy Hour presentation is to give a bit of insight into what makes up professional pyrotechnics display show.  The chemistry of fireworks is almost something right out of medieval "alchemy."  An abbreviated peek at the practical side of setting up and "shooting" a show will also be presented.  John and Brenda have a combined experience of several decades participating in "public fireworks display programs" -- and hope that SCHB and CHAS members and friends of the Divisions will find this presentation enjoyable and timely!

Presentation overview:

  • John and Brenda's professional backgrounds.
  • A little peek at the probable history of gunpowder and fireworks.
  • Brief look at some of the chemicals / materials associated with pyrotechnic displays.
  • Shell construction etc.
  • The professional organizations (guilds) associated with fireworks.
  • A glimpse at what goes on behind the scenes for a "Show" [Public Display].
  • Some fun photos of our efforts "in the field".  "Setting up to Shoot".
  • Names we use for the various shells and "effects" in a show.
