So what did they learn... on the positive rather than negative side?

Actually this could have been the intro to a risk vs benefit discussion , an important concept for students that they pass through their many future transactions ..   otherwise ?

As a school administrator,  I want to know WHY.  I've never heard of a teacher contract that requires a teacher to entertain the students.   And don't try the whole, "well,  it engages the students " argument.   Student engagement means that the students are working on a meaningful task.

My money is on calcium carbide because he said "starting to generate that flammable gas".  Pour water on the calcium carbide and it makes acetylene; the basis for old miner's lamps.

Here's a new one on me.  Science teacher uses "explosives," according to the title, or "flammable gas" according to his narrative, to carve a pumpkin.  I'm guessing methanol, based on the video?  No shields, lots of flame.
