Taipei, Aug. 29 (CNA) A Filipina worker died Wednesday after suffering severe hydrofluoric acid burns in a chemical accident that took place at an optoelectronics factory in Miaoli, the county's Fire Bureau said Thursday.

Tsao Chun-feng (¾?1¾?´e´¢¬), a section chief with the fire bureau, said the 29-year old victim, who was not identified, was rushed to a Taipei hospital for emergency treatment but did not survive.

Hydrofluoric acid is a colorless solution that is highly corrosive and capable of dissolving many types of materials. It is frequently used in the electronics industry, including for metal cleaning and glass etching.

HYDERABAD: In the light of explosive material which was being transported under the guise of ‰??harmless‰?? substances, the city police have written to Petroleum & Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) asking for suggestions on the ways to deal with the hazardous material. The police made the request as the field level cops are not trained to deal with high quantities of the explosive materials.

On Wednesday, a container belonging to a Bhongir-based manufacturing unit was seized as it was transporting a high quantity of hazardous material ‰?? Ammonium Nitrate labelled as Sodium Nitrate ‰?? from Bhongir to Madanapalle in Chittoor district of AP.

According to Koppula Sampath, a chemical researcher, Ammonium Nitrate would combust under extreme conditions of heat and pressure in a confined space and would trigger an explosion.

RSSI has collected and prepared a number of Safety Minutes to be presented before departmental seminars/colloquiums/research talks and strongly encourages their usage at group meetings for research groups within the departments.

Each Safety Minute is centered on a specific safety topic and consists of a few slides that takes only a minute or two to present. Despite its briefness, the safety moment reminds us to conduct our science carefully and that "safety comes first."

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Oaktree Academy officials say they needed to start school more than a week later for students in the 7th-12th grade because of a mercury spill in a building they were renting.

‰??Before last week, we had no experience with dealing with mercury or mercury spills - I mean, who does?‰?? said Principal Kevin Turley.

A mercury spill was a problem leaders at Oaktree Academy never thought they‰??d have to deal with, especially 24 hours before their open house for the start of the school year.

A mercury thermometer fell and broke on a tile floor in an Upper Macungie Township residence Wednesday afternoon, prompting the evacuation of the home.

Fogelsville Fire Chief Jacque Creamer said no one was injured in the 5:45 p.m. incident in the 4600 block of Woodbrush Way, a residential neighborhood.

Testing equipment was called in to help ensure the home was safe for its occupants to re-enter, Creamer said.

Sirens and fire officials surrounded Ward Beecher Hall at Youngstown State University early Tuesday morning after a custodian found a room building filled with smoke.

The university community received a Penguin Alert at 6:46 a.m. that stated the building was closed while the Youngstown Fire Department investigated an alarm.

Classes in Ward Beecher Hall were canceled shortly after requesting the student body, and staff to stay clear of the area.

Ron Cole, director of university communications, said although the fire alarm went off, there was no fire.

There are chemicals for lab and research purposes in Ward Beecher, and Cole said ‰??out of an abundance of caution [the fire officials called] decided to call the hazmat squad to go in and determine what, if anything, is going on in the building.‰??

Five workers at IMTT in Bayonne were taken to local hospitals Wednesday after suffering chemical burns in an industrial incident, Bayonne spokesman Joe Ryan said.

The Bayonne Fire Department responded to 2 Commerce St. just after 3 p.m. and aided the IMTT fire department, which was already on scene, Ryan said.

The workers were injured following a sodium hydroxide leak, Ryan added. The chemical, which is used to manufacture soaps, paper, explosives, petroleum products and more, can severely irritate the skin and eyes.

Hyderabad: A fire broke out at a private organic product manufacturing unit in Cherlapally industrial area phase II on Wednesday early morning. The fire spread to a borewell industry, which is beside the chemical industry. It is estimated that few crores of property was damaged in the accident.

The reason behind the accident is not yet known. According to Medchal District Fire Officer (DFO), on receiving information, fire extinguishers rushed to the spot along with five water tankers. It took five hours for the firefighters to douse the fire.

"It is an organic products manufacturing unit and godown, as they have access from only front side of the building, officials made two makeshift entry points by drilling holes into the compound walls, so that they have access from three sides to fight the fire. As the industries were built long ago, there is lack of fire safety measures in the area and safety measures are very poor," the official said.

ROCHESTER ‰?? The cleanup effort at the site of a chemical fire in Rochester could cost more than $1 million and last for months, not weeks, state Department of Environmental Protection officials said Wednesday.

DEP Secretary Patrick McDonnell and other officials visited the Pool Doctor/Beaver Alkali Products site next to Beaver Valley Bowl to give an update on the cleanup work being done following the

July 12 fire that generated a chlorine and bromine cloud that forced two shelter-in-place advisories.

McDonnell described the location as ‰??an incredibly challenging site for us going in‰?? because of the abundance of unidentified chemicals stored in buildings that were dilapidated and crumbling.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. ‰?? Shelby County fire investigators say two men were using a grinder to remove a lid on a barrel of fuel at the Memphis International Raceway Wednesday morning, when things went terribly wrong.

They say sparks from the grinder came into contact with residual fuel outside of the barrel. One victim was burned over 35 percent of his body. The second victim sustained injuries over 50 percent.

"They were in great pain. Our ambulance paramedics and EMT's were able to start applying immediate high-level care, and we got them right over to the hospital," Brent Perkins, with Shelby County Fire Department, said

A REAL CHEMICAL SHOWMAN

In classic fashion, your public chemistry demonstrations often involve dramatic explosions ‰?? when you think about outreach, what‰??s more important to you ‰?? the science or the entertainment?

It‰??s funny how everyone assumes that as a communicator of chemistry I must spend my time setting fires and blow things up in public, I‰??ve grown increasingly worried that to present chemistry that way undersells chemistry. Ultimately, chemistry is an astonishing intellectual quest, one that few people outside of chemistry truly appreciate and how we present chemistry really needs to represent that aspect. My approach has been to actually reduce the number of demonstrations, while using them instead to tell longer, more coherent stories about why chemistry matters, from individual elements and thermodynamics, to the mystery of biological pattern formation.
....
To understand this we have to face the fact that there are taboo subjects that we chemists do not discuss openly with our students. By focusing on facts and theory in our teaching we fail to prepare our students for the profound ethical and moral dilemmas that confront us. Being an adult is having to make decisions in a world of incomplete and nowadays fake information. The challenge is how to prepare people (young and old) to operate effectively in a dangerous and ‰??wicked‰?? world.

MOHALI: The recent fire incidents at industrial units in Derabassi have prompted deputy commissioner (DC) Girish Dayalan to order a safety audit of 73 chemical units in the district, seeking a report within 15 days.
The DC issued the orders while chairing a meeting with representatives of various industrial associations at the District Administrative Complex, Sector 76, on Tuesday.
Additional deputy commissioner (G) Sakshi Sawhney, sub-divisional magistrates (SDMs) Jagdeep Saigal, Vinod Bansal, Pooja Grewal and assistant commissioner (G) Yashpal Sharma were present.
Expressing concern over the recent fires, the DC said the audit would bring out readiness of industries to tackle incidents besides highlighting if they have requisite arrangements in place to ensure safety of its employees.
