Two more 2 cents...

These are for when you start to have some knowledge under your belt:
If you are in an setting where you have the opportunity - start teaching chemical safety education. Teaching is still one the best ways to learn.
If you are in the ACS, volunteer to work on projects within the chemistry enterprise that are safety related.
