The arrogance and disregard for safety goes well into manufacturing as it does with the teachers mentioned - individuals consider themselves "professionals" and can figure anything out. After 40 years in various manufacturing managing industrial safety, you fight the same battles with supervisors and employees when exposed to hazardous materials - as the lady says "You can fix ignorance, but stupidity can be fatal."

>I don't know a solution, but talking with young teachers convinces me that this is a big part of the problem. I recently contacted a teacher who posted her start of the school year bulletin boards online and asked her to re-consider the one showing a female ‰??teacher‰?? in a lab coat, with her hair standing on end and a smoking test tube in one hand and a vigorously bubbling flask in the other. The words on the display were also giving the wrong idea, but frankly I don‰??t remember them.

I agree that these are core issues, but I don't think that it's just high school teachers who need some education about the basic principles of demonstrating science. On Friday, I happened to visit the home page of Wesleyan University. The second image in their welcome animation (the one entitled "Brave") harkens back to the days of "heroic science" and sends a concerning message about science as performed at that school. I don't understand what message they are trying to send, except that their graphic artist liked the image to go with the title word that the web page authored wanted to include in the sequence...
