Per the International Fire Code (IFC) Chapter 50 is what you would need to review......."Spaces within a building where quantities of hazardous materials not exceeding the maximum allowable quantities per control
area area stored , dispensed, used or handled."

That definition is not much help. huh

These are areas separated by vertical fire barriers with a one hour fire rating on the first 3 floors and two hours on floors above 3.. Horizontal separation is two hours
to be another control area. Without these separations the entire area..a whole floor or a whole building would be considered the control area.
.
The 2018 version of the IFC has a new chapter which refers to the "suites" you mention and is written for labs. The number of allowable control areas per floor and quantity of material allowed is different from
the Chapter 50 content but only is applicable if you meet the requirements of that chapter.

Hello Everyone,

I am reaching out as I need to know the practical definition of a "control area". The NFPA definition is vague and has been interpreted by someone as the whole floor of our building. I find this hard to believe when it is often being used as "laboratory suite or control area" in the standards. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
