I believe OSHA’s answer to your question would be the same regardless of whether your lab falls under the Lab Standard or Industry. Texas may have a more stringent requirement. So, you may want to consult with your state office.

See OSHA’s HAZCOM FAQ page at:

Subject: [DCHAS-L] Sources and Recommendations for SDS's for a Campus

** External Email **

Good Afternoon,

Do you have recommendations for sources of SDS’s for an entire campus (and, if available, pricing information)?  We have an enrollment of 3914 students, which includes the basic lab sciences, Engineering,  Nursing, Physical Therapy, Physician’s Assistant, and Art.

Questions that have arisen as we seek to provide these documents to all employees include the following.

1.  Are paper copies required in case of being unable to access electronic  versions?

2.  Is there a time limit, e.g., 60-second rule as to how quickly someone should be able to access an SDS should an OSHA inspector ask?

Current options under consideration are listed below.

1.  Subscribe to an electronic provider at a recurring rate, so we can access a global database (examples are www.sitehawk.com or www.msdsonline.com)

2.  Help individual work areas develop their own SDS inventories.

3.  Create a central repository of SDS’s for the campus.

Thank you for your advice!

Ruth Ann
