A chemical explosion in a South Campus laboratory that injured a UCLA employee was reported by the Los Angeles Fire Department this afternoon.

LAFD reported an acetone explosion in a laboratory fume hood in Boyer Hall at 2:18 p.m. Ricardo Vazquez, a UCLA spokesperson, said a chemical spill was prevented because the incident occurred under a fume hood.

One employee suffered superficial burn injuries to his hand and has been treated at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, said Administrative Vice Chancellor Michael Beck.

Beck added that UCPD and LAFD cleared the incident this afternoon, and UCLA Environmental Health and Safety is now cleaning up the area.

NIOSH PUBLISHES NEW SKIN-HAZARD PROFILES FOR FIVE CHEMICALS
https://www.safetyandhealthmagazine.com/articles/18024-niosh-publishes-new-skin-hazard-profiles-for-five-chemicals
Tags: public, discovery, environmental

Washington ‰?? NIOSH has published five new skin notation profiles to ‰??communicate the hazards of chemical exposure to the skin‰?? and protect workers from chemical contact.
Each notation contains general information about the chemical, along with its potential effects on the skin and overall health. NIOSH also shares the rationale for including the chemical among its skin notation profiles.
The new profiles are:
Atrazine
Catechol
Chlorinated camphere
Pentachlorophenol
Sodium fluoroacetate
In the foreword of each notation, NIOSH Director John Howard points out that because skin is the primary barrier against external environments, it ‰??is often exposed to potentially hazardous agents, including chemicals, which may contribute to the onset of a spectrum of adverse health effects ranging from localized damage to induction of immune-mediated responses or system toxicity.‰??

In a lawsuit filed after Hurricane Harvey, a federal judge has ordered the Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board to force the disclosure of chemical emissions resulting from accidents.

More than 1,000 industrial chemical accidents take place every year. The biggest include the explosions that killed 15 people at a fertilizer plant in West, Tex., and the explosions that took place at the Arkema chemical plant in the Houston area after unprecedented flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey.

Judge Amit Mehta of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia said that the Clean Air Act required the federal agency, known as the Chemical Safety Board, to investigate chemical fires, explosions, leaks and other accidents. But the board has not yet put regulations into place that require disclosure.

Mehta observed that the agency has had more than 20 years ‰?? far in excess of any ‰??unreasonable delay‰?? ‰?? to promulgate a final regulation and ordered the board to come up with a regulation within 12 months. ‰??The court will not grant it two full years to do what it should have done long ago,‰?? Mehta wrote.

Unsafe gas levels were detected in the bathroom of a luxury cruise ship in Sydney where a woman's body was found over the weekend, Australian officials said Monday.

The New South Wales Police Force said in a news release the body of the 39-year-old woman was found about 4 p.m. Saturday in the bathroom of the Lady Rose, a three-level charter boat.

Officers from the Marine Area Command attended, along with Fire and Rescue NSW HAZMAT crews as a crime scene was established.

"Investigators were advised that several gas detection tests were conducted in a bathroom area of the vessel and were found to be in excess of safe operating levels," NWS police said.

A small collision on Wildernest Road in Silverthorne nearly turned to disaster on Friday as gallons of diesel fuel flooded into the street in front of the 7-Eleven gas station.

Emergency crews from Summit Fire & EMS and the Red, White & Blue Fire Protection District were able to respond and clean the spill in time, preventing any combustion of the hazardous materials in front of the gas station and stopping the fuel from pouring into the Blue River or the sewer system.

At about 8:30 p.m. on Friday, crews from Summit Fire & EMS were engaged in fighting a small structure fire at the Chateau Claire Condominiums in Dillon when they received a call about a hazardous materials spill on Wildernest Road, near the Interstate 70 interchange and the main ingress towards the Wildernest and Mesa Cortina subdivisions, said Chief Jeff Berino.

Black smoke has cleared from the oil refinery on the outskirts of Delaware City, a community some residents say is plagued by its proximity to industry.

‰??I would rather not have the refinery here, but we do have it," said local business owner and Delaware City Councilwoman Megan Titus. "We‰??ve always had it. What are you going to do? Have everyone move?‰??

When a fire broke out in the crude unit at the oil refinery, owned by New Jersey-based PBF Energy, on Del. 9 about noon on Sunday, it revived a realization that ongoing pollution can easily be forgotten ‰?? until there's an incident.

Titus said there have been fires at the refinery before, but without visible flames or smoke, people don't often notice them.

LARA UPDATES MARIJUANA GUIDELINES FOR ACTIVE INGREDIENTS, SAFETY TESTS, AND REMEDIATION PROTOCOLS

LANSING, Mich. (WLUC) - Monday, the Bureau of Marijuana Regulation (BMR) updated multiple bulletins related to safety tests, approved/banned active ingredients, and updated remediation methods.

‰??Since the inception of our program, we have been listening to input from medical marijuana stakeholders and have been looking at best practices from other states,‰?? said BMR Director Andrew Brisbo. ‰??The changes announced today are a direct result of the input we have received from those in the industry. We are confident that these new standards will continue to keep medical marijuana products safe for Michigan‰??s patients while allowing businesses to run efficiently.‰??

Highlights from the changes announced Monday:
‰?˘ In a Safety Compliance Facility bulletin, BMR changed banned chemical residue active ingredient detection limits to action limits. Instead of any detection of pesticides resulting in a failure, the new chemical residue standard allows a sample to pass if the detection is below the limit. This change was brought about by industry feedback and reduces the possibility of very minute environmental contaminants resulting in failed marijuana tests. It also brings Michigan in line with other states‰?? regulations.

‰?˘ Since there are currently no federally recognized and published action limits or tolerances for marijuana in 40 CFR part 180, subpart C, or the federal insecticide fungicide, and rodenticide act, 7 USC 136 to 136y; the department published its own list. This list will be continually evaluated and updated based on available scientific and industry information. If the federal government adds marijuana to 40 CFR part 180, subpart C, or the federal insecticide fungicide, and rodenticide act, 7 USC 136 to 136y, LARA will adopt these standards.

MONROE, La. (KNOE) ‰?? A storage tank caught fire in Monroe Friday afternoon, sending a billowing pillar of smoke into the air.
It happened behind the DOTD building on Desiard Street around one o‰??clock.
Monroe fire officials say someone was trying to cut an empty tank with a cutting torch when it caught fire. The amount of smoke alarmed nearby residents and drivers on Desiard Street, busy with lunchtime traffic.
Officials say asphalt residue contributed to the amount of smoke.
They say the fire was put out in 15 minutes.

An evacuation order from emergency officials has been put into effect in the nearby surrounding area of the Lafayette Utilities System North Water Plant. This is due to a chemical hydrated lime spill that took place Sunday, February 3rd.

LUS officials, Lafayette Fire Department, Lafayette Police Department and Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality have isolated the affected areas to err on the side of caution. LUS and ES&H are working to neutralize the situation by removing the substance from the contained area.

A small amount of hydrated lime was released from the LUS North Water Plant and caused a cloud of the material to spread over the area, covering nearby roofs and structures. The white powdery substance, when airborne, can cause eye, skin and respiratory irritation. Residents in the area who may have come into contact with the substance are cautioned to wash any exposed skin with plenty of water.

One person has died and dozens have been displaced following a devastating house explosion that levelled a home in Caledon, Ont.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene Sunday just before 6:30 a.m. and evacuated a large perimeter around the blast site.
‰??The house is absolutely gone, there‰??s no other way to describe it. The house is obliterated,‰?? OPP Const. Ian Michael told CP24.
....
The force of the blast sent debris flying across neighbouring streets and into trees. Residents have reported damage to at least six homes including broken windows and a damaged garage door.
Const. Michael confirmed a gas leak was detected when emergency crews arrived on scene, but it is unknown whether this was the cause of the blast. Natural gas to the area has now been shut off.

BEIJING, China ‰?? The Chinese chemical firm responsible for an explosion that killed 24 people and injured 21 others in northern China last year hid information and misled investigators, said local authorities in a report published Sunday.

A gas leak caused the explosion last November at a PVC production plant in Zhangjiakou, a northern Chinese city in Hebei province that will host part of the 2022 Winter Olympics.

"After the accident occurred, Hebei Shenghua Chemical Industry Company did not report (the incident) to relevant government departments in accordance with regulations, concealed the accident, and misled investigators," said the emergency management department of northern Hebei province.

In its report, local authorities also pointed to the company's lack of safety measures and "chaotic" management for contributing to the blast.

Those in charge of key departments were "not at the company for long periods of time" and violations of labour regulations by employees were common, including playing on their mobile phones and sleeping during work hours, said the report
