OROVILLE, Calif. - The Oroville Fire Department responded to an unusual structure fire on Saturday afternoon at 1212 3rd Ave. in Oroville.

It was just about 4:45 p.m. when a report was made of a fire at a single family home with a small fire on the back porch.

The origin, said Fire Captain David Hilson, involved a pile of about 8,000 batteries, mostly D-sized.

We were told the batteries were to be used as part of a business venture.

Captain Hilson said the fire was contained quickly with minimal damage to the actual home, but a hazmat team had to be called in to clean up the burned pile of batteries and associated damage.

The Butte County Public Health Department was involved in the removal of the toxic debris.
