I am not sure that too many code inspectors would allow a temporary installation for much longer unless it is something like a construction project but thank you for the clarification.

A small chemical spill Wednesday afternoon caused evacuation of Kansas State University‰??s Burt Hall while Manhattan Fire Department crews checked the building, the fire department said.

The department in a news release said crews were dispatched just before 3 p.m. to Burt Hall, 1220 N. 17th St., on a report of a chemical spill. When they arrived, they found a small chemical container on the second floor had overpressurized.

Burt Hall was evacuated as a precaution while crews identified and neutralized the chemical.

Two people possibly exposed to the chemical were evaluated by Riley County EMS, then released, according to the fire department.

Crews determined the building was safe and cleared the scene about 5 p.m.

Something happened on Tuesday at the Delaware City Refinery that sent three contractors to a special burn unit at Crozer Medical Center, yet neither the facility's owner, PBF Energy, nor the state is releasing many details.

On Wednesday, Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal Robert Fox retracted his initial statement that had described the event as an explosion.

In an emailed statement, Fox said, "Further investigation revealed that what was originally described as an explosion was actually a release of heated product under pressure."

"The plant suffered no damage and no down time of equipment," he said.

Fox did not respond to questions about where initial information about an explosion came from, what kind of "heated product" caused the burns, or how it was released.

Four hours before the retraction, PBF Energy President Matt Lucey defiantly called news reports of the event at his company's facility "extraordinary misreporting."

Chevron Phillips Chemical surprised Crockett Elementary students in Goose Creek CISD with a special campus visit for Fire Prevention Week. More than 350 students in pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, first and second grades received a first-hand lesson in fire safety and emergency response thanks to members of Chevron Phillips Chemical‰??s Emergency Response Team in Baytown who volunteered to visit the school.

The students were able to see and touch one of the petrochemical plant‰??s in-house fire trucks and learn about its safety equipment and hear its emergency horn blow. They were also introduced to a firefighter‰??s safety clothing while several students were able to try on the jacket and hat. Volunteers also demonstrated the use of a fire extinguisher and talked about the importance of calling 9-1-1, what to do in case of a fire, and how to perform the stop-drop-and-roll technique. Students took home red, plastic firefighter hats and coloring books as souvenirs from the event.

COMBUSTIBLE DUST FIRES AND EXPLOSIONS: RECENT DATA AND LESSONS LEARNED https://www.chemengonline.com/combustible-dust-fires-explosions-recent-data-lessons-learned/
Tags: Canada, industrial, discovery, environmental, dust

Fires and explosions in facilities that handle combustible dust remain an ongoing focus of process safety efforts across many areas of the chemical process industries (CPI). But how many dust-related safety incidents occur each year? This question is a major driver behind the formation of the Combustible Dust Incident Database (CDID; Halifax, N.S., Canada; www.dustsafetyscience.com). Created in 2016, the CDID features a twice-yearly report on fires and explosions having to do with combustible dusts. The CDID is an online portal with the purpose of reporting, tracking and generating lessons learned from fire and explosion incidents around the world. The database is meant as a tool for technical decision makers to anticipate upcoming difficulties and process safety trends in their industries, and to give the powder-handing community a platform to measure and manage combustible dust hazards.

The information collected and tabulated on combustible-dust incidents in the CDID is now helping to determine trends and tendencies in the materials, industries and equipment involved with these hazards.

This article outlines the findings from the incident reporting completed to date. Comparisons are made between the CDID information and historical combustible-dust explosion data within the U.S. Also, an overview of the personal and financial loss resulting from these types of incidents is provided.

Mumbai: A worker was injured in an explosion at the Taloja Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) area of Navi Mumbai on Monday morning. Police said the incident occurred at 8.15am, when the JCB machine, was digging a hole to dispose of toxic chemical waste. JCB machine‰??s excavator bucket hit the drum it was going to bury, resulting in a blast. The tremors caused were felt in the nearby villages, as far as Kalyan.

‰??The explosion was so massive, the JCB machine flew right out of the pit and landed upside down, a few metres from it,‰?? said supervisor Vidyakant Mishra. ‰??Since I was away checking other operations, I escaped unhurt. However, the JCB machine driver , Santosh Patil, 42, sustained serious injuries,‰?? said Mishra.

The industrial waste collected from Mumbai and neighbouring places is dumped on Taloja MIDC land. Police said on Monday, when workers were dumping the chemicals that had been separated from the industrial waste on land owned by the Mumbai Waste Management Ltd, they realised there was an emission from one of the drums.

MANISTEE ‰?? Police identified the hazardous chemical found during a death investigation at First Street Beach over the weekend.

Authorities were called to First Street Beach around 9 a.m on Sunday, when a couple found a man lying unresponsive on a cot, near the water‰??s edge.

Tim Kozal, Manistee director of public safety, said sodium azide was contained in a white bottle inside of the 27-year-old Mancelona man‰??s vehicle. His vehicle was impounded, and a search led to the discovery of the toxic chemical.

On Sunday, emergency responders were decontaminated and evaluated at Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital. One officer was kept overnight and released on Monday.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, sodium azide is a rapidly acting chemical that can be deadly when mixed with water or an acid and exists as an odorless, white solid.
