New Delhi, Oct 23 (IANS): The fire that started at the sprawling Bhalaswa landfill site here on Sunday is continuing for the third day on Tuesday, while a very poor quality air is choking Delhi.

The fire-services said that while four tenders are already trying to douse the fire, two more have been sent to the site. Municipal engineers said they have procured more debris to cover the exposed area to extinguish the fire.

The inferno on Delhi's second largest un-engineered mountain of garbage started due to gaseous fumes. The 40 m tall oversaturated landfill that spreads over 50 acres is located amid one of the most populated regions of Delhi.

"The fire usually starts due to formation of methane gas within the layers of garbage," Sanjay Jain, Engineer, Department of Environment Maintenance Services (DEMS) at North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), told IANS.

Three town workers were taken to a hospital Tuesday after they breathed in noxious fumes at the Canton transfer station, fire officials said.

Shortly before 8 a.m., a chemical reaction in a Dumpster at the transfer station at 202 Ramp Road released some sort of vapor that the three workers inhaled, Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Kerr said.

‰??The haz mat team believed it‰??s a combination of some kind of acid and motor oil,‰?? he said.

The Connecticut Capitol Region Hazardous Materials Response Team was called in, Kerr said.

Neither Kerr nor Sylvia Cancela, spokeswoman for the Canton Volunteer Fire and EMS Department, would describe the workers‰?? injuries, but Cancela said firefighters were told the three workers were taken to the hospital ‰??out of an abundance of caution.‰??

SIVAKASI STARES AT UNCERTAINTY AS SC BANS FIRE CRACKERS

The multi-crore fireworks industry in Sivakasi was hoping for a relief from the Supreme Court, but the judgement delivered on Tuesday with regard to use of fire crackers has left the manufacturers worried about their future.

The court‰??s ban on use of a chemical known as barium nitrate has come as a bolt from the blue for fireworks manufacturers in Sivakasi, which accounts for 90% of fire crackers produced in the country. If the ban on the chemical is enforced, 75% of the products will have to be stopped since the chemical is a crucial ingredient in fire crackers, manufacturers say.

Tamil Nadu Fireworks and Amorces Manufacturers Association (TANFAMA), the parent body of fireworks manufacturers, is mulling moving a review petition before the court to lift the ban on the use of barium nitrate.

K Mariappan, general secretary of TANFAMA, told DH that the organisation would also seek the help of Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) in moving the apex court. ‰??We have no other option left before us. We will certainly move the court seeking to lift the ban. In this process, we will involve PESO and Tamil Nadu government. Barium nitrate is indispensable for the industry and we cannot produce a majority of the fire crackers without using the chemical,‰?? Mariappan told DH.

SAN ANTONIO - More than 100 people were evacuated from a KCI building Tuesday afternoon after a fire broke out at the medical lab.

When crews arrived, they had to use extreme caution because they initially did not know what type of chemical with which they were dealing. Hazmat was called to the scene as a precaution.

The chemical was later identified to be Dermisol, and crews were cleared to put out the fire.

‰??What we found was a small fire that was electrical in nature and went into a fume hood. It caused a little bit of a reaction with this chemical, and that's what caused all the alarms to go off and the evacuation process began,‰?? said Woody Woodward, with the San Antonio Fire Department.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ - There was a hydrochloric acid spill at a building on Springfield Avenue on Tuesday afternoon, with Maplewood Fire and Nutley Haz-Mat responding to the scene.

According to the Maplewood Fire Department, at about 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, they received a call advising that hydrochloric acid had been spilled and was causing a smoke condition.

Maplewood firefighters arrived at the building and found that a container of the chemical, which the building occupant said had been in the basement for over 30 years, was in the process of being removed by Stericycle Environmental Solutions, a chemical waste removal company.

In the process of transferring it to a newer, larger container, the existing one started leaking and fell on the stairs from the basement to the outside, stated the Maplewood Fire Department.

The Stericycle operator notified the fire department of the situation, and upon arrival the Stericycle driver informed the firefighters that he had inhaled some of the smoke, and he was transferred to St. Barnabas Hospital for evaluation as a precaution, stated the Maplewood Fire Department.

CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- Fire officials estimate a couple hundred gallons of transmission fluid spilled onto the street in Chula Vista Monday evening, creating a slippery situation for drivers.

"We were getting reports of cars that were actually spinning out sliding and we had a lot of near misses," said Battalion Chief Darrell Roberts with Chula Vista Fire Department.

The spill affected the area of Broadway between F and Davidson streets. Officials say the mess came from a nearby auto repair shop no longer in business when someone was preparing to dispose of transmission fluid.

"We‰??ve stopped all the flow that‰??s going into the storm drain, but unfortunately we can‰??t have a good estimate of what‰??s down there in the storm drain," said Roberts.

CHEMICAL CRACKDOWN AT CONSTRUCTION SITES THIS WEEK

Inspectors from the workplace health and safety watchdog will this week visit construction sites across the country as part of a crackdown on exposure to dangerous, cancer-causing chemicals.

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) will be calling to sites to ensure workers are not being exposed to silica dust, asbestos, and other chemical products used in construction, while also gathering information on substances being used on sites such as epoxy resins, solvent-based paints, and foams.

The inspections are part of Construction Safety Week 2018, an initiative of the Construction Safety Partnership Advisory Committee, whose members include the HSA, CIF, trade unions, and other industry stakeholders.
