Hi Monique

We have a laundry contract with Aramark to launder lab coats. It isn't all that expensive, since it's a campus-wide contract. Around $30.00 per month, if memory serves, and we own the coats - it's not a rental contract. There isn't a schedule, per se, but if a coat is looking really gross, I'll tell the wearer to send it for laundry. There's really no excuse to be wearing a manky (technical term) lab coat.

As to student coats - if it's just soiled from normal wear, they can take it home and launder it themselves. If the coat gets contaminated, depending on the contamination, they are provided a loaner coat and the contaminated coat is deconned and returned (rare). Otherwise, it's sent out as hazardous waste.

We also have a program with the bookstore to recycle coats. If a student is done with chemistry and doesn't want to keep their coat, it's laundered through the contract and packaged for re-sale through the bookstore. It's a popular program

Hello Wise Ones,

Does anyone require lab coats to be washed? If so, how often and how? Would like to know for both chemical and biological scenarios. Do you have laundry facilities on site or hire out or take home? What about student lab coats?
