Ralph,
I apologize for not being clear. My question refers to experiments with planned high pressure. For example, hydrogenations in a Parr shaker. Some think at a certain pressure they shouldn't be doing the reaction in their laboratory even though the reactor/shaker/equipment is rated for the desired psi. I was just curious if universities had a conservative threshold or if they evaluate it case by case.

I'm not clear if you're referring to planned high pressure processes or to emergency scenarios that result from explosions. According to Labconco, even explosion proof chemical hoods are not designed to contain explosions

rather their electrical design makes them less likely to spark one.

I don't if I ever seen a hood designed to contain an explosion inside the hood...
