NC State University is the largest and most diverse research institution in the state of North Carolina.

The university is comprised of 2110 acres on the Raleigh campus, plus over 100,000 acres in research and extension farms and other facilities throughout the state of North Carolina. Its population of 31,100 students and 2040 faculty include more than 2500 graduate students supported on research and teaching appointments in the 68 established research and service centers. The 1334 acre NC State Centennial Campus complex includes a mix of wet lab and office incubator space for startup companies as well as buildings co-inhabited by university departments and industrial tenants. This complex and diverse environment, particularly the heavy concentration of research centers and institutes, provides a challenging and interesting work environment for health and safety professionals.

The primary focus of this position will be to develop or participate in the development or refinement of lab safety programs, conduct lab safety and industrial hygiene audits, inspections, process hazard reviews, training, edit, revise, develop health and safety guidelines, and to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, recommendations for improvement of workplace safety conditions. This employee will be part of a lab safety team dedicated to the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of chemical and physical agents at NC State University. These activities, aimed at eliminating conditions which may adversely effect worker or student health and safety, or may violate OSHA regulations, will be conducted principally at the main campus of NC State University in Raleigh, NC yet may include infrequent visits to NC State property located throughout the state of North Carolina. Primary responsibilities include participation in a nanotechnology safety !
program, experimental process safety, and other aspects of a laboratory safety program. Participation in the revision/update/establishment of standards and guidelines for proper laboratory design, practices and procedures, including shipping of hazardous materials is included. Assistance, as needed, with the laboratory exposure and incident prevention program, investigation of employee injuries, infrequent emergency response to chemical incidents, and monitoring and documentation of environmental exposures to specific hazardous agents, including review and guidance to laboratory on the proper selection and use of protective equipment as necessary, are included.

This is a position requiring a health and safety professional who can participate in program development / implementation and with an interest in conducting health and safety hazard assessments and investigations in an extremely large, diverse, and highly technical environment. , A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal correspondence is also required. Minimum experience/education includes Bachelor‰??s degree in Physical Science, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science/Engineering or related discipline with 2-3 years of experience. Experience in research environment is preferred.

Work Schedule

8:00 A.M. - 5 P.M. Monday through Friday

This position reports to the Manager, Laboratory Safety Section, in the Environmental Health and Safety Center.
