Monique – I’ll second what Ed said, and add that the Division is more “program” and “networking” oriented and the Committee is more “policy” oriented. While there is obvious synergy between the two groups (about =BD of the CCS members are active in CHAS), there are a lot of differences. For example, CHAS does not have a staff person within ACS, while CCS has a staff liaison & assistant, and now Marta as Manager of the new Office of Safety. CCS also gets a budget from ACS; CHAS funding (called “allocation”) is based primarily on the number of members.

The ACS is subdivided into technical divisions. Each technical division is field specific and provides members a forum for networking and collaboration within their specialty area. the Division on Chemical Health & Safety (DivCHAS) is made up of safety professionals and persons with a deep interest in safety. Divisions also have bylaws.
The Committee on Chemical Safety (CCS) provides advice, publications, notifications and counsel to ensure safety by calling attention to potential hazards and stimulating education in safe chemical practices. CCS also serves as a resource to other ACS units on matters related to chemical safety and health. Many (but not all) of the members on the CCS are members of the CHAS division, but only a few members of the Division are on the CCS. All CHAS Division members are members of the ACS.

Subject: [DCHAS-L] Relationship between CHAS & CCS?
Hello Everyone,
I have noticed a lot of overlap in CHAS and CCS, including people involved. Can anyone clarify the differences and how they work together for me? Or should I attend the open meeting on Saturday of the conference to find out more about CCS?
I am currently studying for the CHO certification exam and finding that there are so many places with similar resources and goals.
