Subject: [DCHAS-L] Demo safety resources

Dear all,

In response to the latest high school "rainbow" flame test demo fire, various groups within ACS teamed up to create some resources for educators. At http://cenm.ag/labdemo, you'll find:

- An infographic illustrating the latest NFPA 45/Chapter 12 guidance for performing experiments or demonstrations, with a downloadable pdf

- A video showing the sticks-in-Bunsen burner flame test procedure, modeled from the CCS/UC Davis protocol.

The infographic will appear in C&EN in print in our Nov. 23 issue, paired with a story about the school fires, how teachers should be thinking about demos or student experiments, and safety recommendations.

Please feel free to distribute the infographic, video, and story as you see fit--including, perhaps, to your local school district. C&EN will keep these outside of the membership wall so anyone may view them.

Many thanks to Debbie Decker and her UC colleagues for previewing and critiquing the first draft of the video last week.

Jyllian
