TAIWAN FIRE INJURES MORE THAN 500
Tags: Taiwan, public, fire, injury, dust

TAIPEI‰?? More than 500 people have been sent to hospitals in Taiwan with burns after a fire broke out at a water park party late Saturday. Authorities say the blaze started when powder intended for festive lighting was accidentally ignited near the party stage.

The incident late Saturday in a Taipei suburb touched off a fire along the ground of the Formosa Fun Coast, a water theme park where about 1,000 people were gathered for a privately organized party called Color Play Asia. A New Taipei City fire department official said most of the 516 who were reported hurt suffered burns to their lower bodies.

OREGON, OH -- A chemical spill caused an evacuation at the Menards in Oregon on Sunday.

Assistant Chief Mike Mullins with the Oregon Fire Department said an employee was loading pool shock onto a shelf when it fell and spilled on the ground. Two employees were taken to the hospital with chemical-reaction symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and eye-irritation. The injuries were not serious.

Mullins said the store had to close early but said the hope was it could re-open on time Monday morning.

PEPPER SPRAY CONTAMINATES MULTIPLE FLOORS IN VANCOUVER HIGHRISE
Tags: Canada, public, release, injury, pepper_spray

A Vancouver highrise was partially evacuated Saturday night after someone sprayed pepper spray in an elevator contaminating multiple floors.

Vancouver's hazmat team was called out to the 1100 block of Seymour Street around 11 p.m last night.

After the elevator was sprayed, the noxious substance spread throughout the building as the elevator travelled up and down between floors.

Several ambulances were called to the scene. Several people were affected by the spray, but none seriously.

Officials say they were not impressed by the call.

ACCIDENTAL PEPPER SPRAY DISCHARGE CAUSES DELAYS ON JFK AIRTRAIN
Tags: us_NY, public, release, injury, pepper_spray

An accidental pepper spray discharge sparked a hazmat investigation on board a John F. Kennedy Airport AirTrain at Jamaica Station, causing extensive delays for travelers Sunday morning.
According to the Port Authority, a cleaning worker was clearing out a garbage can when the pepper spray discharged just before 10:30 a.m.
Police initially said their investigation was because of a suspicious white powder, though that turned out not to be the case.
The AirTrain was placed back into service at around 11:20 a.m.
Six people who were affected by the pepper spray were seen by EMS workers, but refused medical attention.

HAZMAT SUITS NEEDED TO CONTAIN POTENTIAL CORNER BROOK GAS LEAK
Tags: Canada, public, release, response, chlorine

Firefighters in Corner Brook wore hazmat suits while responding to a potential gas leak at the Second Pond Chlorination Station on Friday.

An alarm was triggered at the station that morning, indicating a possible chlorine gas leak. Upon arrival, officials saw that a red warning light had also been triggered by the potential leak.

Corner Brook Fire Chief Neville Wheaton says chlorine is stored in cylinders at the substation because the chemical is injected into the town's drinking supply.

"So you're consuming the chlorine anyway," he said.

"That's not to say there's not issues with it. There's all kinds of isolated issues like exposure to chlorine gas that's escaping ‰?? [it] could cause burns because, you know, it gets on your skin."

Three suited firefighters entered the station Friday morning, isolated the gas tank and ventilated the building.

"Now, the maintenance people will go back and check and see where the leak was and have it repaired," Wheaton said.

While Wheaton wasn't alarmed by the small leak, he said it was important that his department take all necessary safety precautions.

FERTILIZER TRUCK TAKES A SPILL, LOSES 700 GALLONS
Tags: us_ID, transportation, release, response, ag_chems

SUGAR CITY ‰?? Thursday at 10:06 am, Madison Fire Department responded to a semi truck rollover near 5000 North and 1000 East, along the County Line Road, near Sugar City.

The truck carried 3,000 gallons of Ammonium Thiosulfate, a liquid fertilizer being transported by Helena Chemical Company out of Sugar City, Idaho. Approximately 700 gallons spilled out of the tank before the spill was contained.

The semi truck rolled over after the right front tire left the asphalt and sunk into the soft dirt of the right shoulder. Those involved with the incident were treated and released at the scene.

Nine Madison Fire Department personnel were on scene for five hours involved in the decontamination of exposed individuals and cleanup of the scene. The fire department was assisted by the Madison County Sheriff‰??s Office and Idaho State Police.

HAZMAT SITUATION REPORTED AT LA FITNESS IN SOUTH WHITEHALL TOWNSHIP
Tags: us_PA, public, release, injury, unknown_chemical

SOUTH WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. -
Officials say a hazmat situation prompted the evacuation of the LA Fitness in South Whitehall Township Saturday afternoon.

According to officials, an excess of chemicals in the fitness center's pool led to the evacuation.

Crews cleared the scene after the situation was under control and operations have resumed as scheduled.

QUICK CLICKS

Crews on scene say at least one person was transported to an area hospital for treatment. There is currently no word on their condition.

SPARKS FROM TRAIN CAUSED HUGE NORTHWEST PORTLAND FIRE NEAR HAZARDOUS WASTE DEPOT, OFFICIALS SAY
Tags: us_OR, transportation, fire, response, waste

Sparks from a passing freight train caused the huge 30-acre grassland fire along Front Street in industrial Northwest Portland Friday afternoon, fire officials said Saturday.

The blaze, which burned only grass and brush, started on land adjacent to the Metro Central Transfer Station, which accepts hazardous waste as well as garbage and recycling.

Firefighters warned Metro of the danger that smoke might cause in the area, said Lt. Tommy Schroeder, public information officer for Portland Fire & Rescue.

The fire agency mounted a huge response to the blaze, with more than 70 firefighters and other rescue officials at the scene, Schroeder said. That ensured the Metro hazardous waste depot never posed a serious fire jeopardy, he said.

The site that burned was on the south and east side of the Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railroad track, just after the track crosses the Willamette River, Schroeder said. The fire remained north and west of Northwest Front Avenue.

INTERNATIONAL AGENCY DEEMS 2,4-D A POSSIBLE HUMAN CARCINOGEN
Tags: public, discovery, environmental, pesticides

The widely used herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is ‰??possibly carcinogenic to humans,‰?? concludes the World Health Organization‰??s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
IARC released its determination this week, based on ‰??strong evidence that 2,4-D induces oxidative stress,‰?? a condition that can lead to chronic inflammation and ultimately cancer. IARC says there is ‰??inadequate evidence‰?? to fully deem 2,4-D a human carcinogen and ‰??limited evidence‰?? of carcinogenicity in laboratory animals.
Chemical manufacturers are strongly disputing the ‰??possibly‰?? classification, saying it is inconsistent with government findings in nearly 100 countries, including the U.S.
‰??No herbicide has been more thoroughly studied and no national regulatory body in the world considers 2,4-D a carcinogen,‰?? says John Cuffe, global regulatory sciences and regulatory affairs leader at Dow AgroSciences.
The company won approval late last year to market its Enlist Duo herbicide‰??a mixture of 2,4-D and glyphosate‰??in the U.S. Many environmental groups are concerned this will cause use of 2,4-D to skyrocket.

TERRORIST ATTACK HITS U.S.-OWNED CHEMICAL PLANT IN FRANCE
Tags: France, industrial, explosion, death, unknown_chemical

A suspected Islamist extremist attacked an Air Products & Chemicals industrial gases plant early on June 26 in L‰??Isle-d‰??Abeau, near Lyon, France. Onlookers told radio reporters that one man crashed a car traveling at high speed through the gates of the site and then into gas canisters, causing an explosion. The man has been arrested and the site locked down.
Inside the car, French police report that officers discovered a decapitated body with a message written on it. The head of the person was reportedly attached to the factory fence along with an Islamist flag.
Two other people were injured in the attack, said French President Fran̤ois Hollande in a press briefing. No further details were given about their condition. ‰??There is absolutely no doubt about this that the intention was to cause an explosion,‰?? Hollande said.
It is unclear whether the individual who was killed was from inside the chemical complex, although Air Products says all of its personnel at the site have been evacuated and accounted for.

VOCM.COM|HAZMAT TEAM RESPONDS TO CHLORINE LEAK IN CORNER BROOK
Tags: us_FL, public, release, response, chlorine

A small chlorine leak in Corner Brook had crews responding to the water sub-station at Second Pond. Fire Chief Neville Wheaton says an alarm was activated this morning indicating some sort of leak. Members of the HazMat team suited up to enter the station to examine the potential leak.

Wheaton describes the leak as small.

LA CROSSE FIRE DEPT.: 20 PERCENT OF HAZMAT OF CALLS IN LAST TWO YEARS INVOLVED METH LABS

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) -
The use of a dangerous drug is becoming more noticeable among first responders.

Police: 15 'one pot' meth labs found during drug bust

La Crosse police arrest man for 'Shake-and-Bake' meth lab in vehicle
The La Crosse Fire Department presented Thursday some troubling findings about meth use in the community to La Crosse County's Heroin and Illicit Drug Task Force.

The report showed over the last two years, 20 percent of the fire department's hazmat calls involved meth labs.

The department says the biggest problem is portable meth labs or what's better known as a shake and bake.

"It's kind of a moving target so to speak, literally because of the probability of the small bottles, they can make it in cars, they can make it in hotel rooms, they can be transients, go from apartment to apartment," said LCFD Capt. Jeff Schott.

The department says the chemicals used to make meth are highly explosive and often times put them at risk when responding to calls.
