FIREFIGHTER, WORKER HURT IN WESTBURY INDUSTRIAL FIRE
Tags: us_NY, industrial, fire, injury, dust

WESTBURY - Workers at a Westbury manufacturing plant were evacuated and hazmat crews were called after a fire broke out at the facility Monday afternoon.
Nassau County Fire Marshal Vincent McManus says metallic powders used in products like airline engines are produced at the Oerlikon manufacturing plant on Prospect Avenue. The fire broke out at around 1:30 p.m. in a container that holds metallic dust.
One worker was injured at the time of the accident, although the extent of his injuries are unclear. A firefighter was also injured when a piece of machinery collapsed at the plant.
McManus says it's not uncommon for containers like the one involved in today's incident to catch fire. He says Monday's warm temperatures may have also been a factor, but the exact cause of the flames remains unclear.

TRUCK COLLISION CAUSES HAZMAT LEAK FROM PIPELINE IN HOUSTON

An 18-wheeler truck hit a gas pipeline in La Porte, Houston, killing the driver and causing a leak of hazardous material on Monday, news website myfoxhouston.com reported.

Fire officials said the ruptured pipleline leaked a large quantity of propylene on Highway 225, blocking the road between Allen Genoa and Goodyear, according to the report.

Crews were trying to cap the leak, the report said. It did not name the company that operates the pipeline. Fire officials were not immediately available for comment.

EXPLOSION INVESTIGATED AT CHESTERFIELD HOTEL; NO INJURIES REPORTED

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. ‰?? Fire crews were called to the Intown Suites on Green Spring Road near Chesterfield Towne Center for a report of an explosion at about 5 a.m. Tuesday. Once crews arrived to the hotel, they reported no fire and no one was hurt.

Witnesses reported hearing a loud boom and then footsteps running down the hallway. They also reported smelling chemicals. Investigators are working to locate the person who rented the room in question.

The explosion was big enough to blow the outside window out of the wall. It landed more than 20 feet away in the parking lot. The entire building was evacuated for most of the morning while HAZMAT crews inspected the scene, but tenants were allowed back inside the hotel around noon.

The initial report was for a flash fire. The sprinkler system at the InTown Suites actually extinguished the flames after the explosion.

‰??The Chesterfield Fire and EMS Hazardous Materials team was brought in to investigate the scene but found no evidence of hazardous materials in the room,‰?? Chesterfield Fire and EMS spokesman Lt. Jason Elmore said.

HOUSTON -
The westbound lanes of Highway 225 at Allen Genoa have reopened after a fatal truck accident involving a HazMat spill.

A fiery crash on Highway 225 shut down both sides of the freeway for more than 13 hours Monday.

An 18-wheeler ran off the freeway, made its way over the barriers and slammed into a gas line -- sending a flammable chemical called propylene into the air, according to Houston police.

REPORT: CHEMICAL MIX MAY CAUSE CANCER
Tags: New_Zealand, public, discovery, environmental, unknown_chemical

Chemicals deemed safe to humans may blend lethally together inside the human body to cause cancer, a high-profile scientific taskforce has ruled.

Researchers, including New Zealand scientist Dr Linda Gulliver, have released findings into possible links between common chemicals and the development of cancer.

Their results, published in the journal Carcinogenesis, show mixtures of chemicals used in our environment may be acting in concert with each other inside the body to trigger the deadly disease.

Dr Gulliver, from Otago University's faculty of medicine, says on the back of the findings of the Halifax Project, "considerable attention" needs to be given to investigating the concerning links.

The taskforce was formed in 2013 by the NGO Getting to Know Cancer which had concerns that cancer research has focused primarily on the role of heritable and lifestyle factors as triggers.

This is despite evidence that as many as one in five cancers may be caused by chemical exposures in the environment that are not related to personal lifestyle choices.

Chemicals are tested for carcinogenic links but only one at a time, leaving questions around the possibility that a fusion of these chemicals may instead be causing cancer.

The taskforce of 174 scientists in 28 countries investigated 85 prototypic chemicals that were not considered to be carcinogenic to humans, and they reviewed their effects against a long list of mechanisms that are important for cancer development.

MACHINE FIRE IN UCSD RESEARCH BUILDING

SAN DIEGO ‰?? Firefighters made quick work of a blaze at the Stein Clinical Research Building at UC San Diego Monday morning, San Diego Fire said.

The fire started around 4 a.m. on the first floor of the research facility off of Gillman Drive when a paint shaker machine melted. The sprinkler system of the building was activated and kept the flames at bay until firefighters arrived a few minutes later. They managed to knock the fire down around 4:45 a.m.

Several Hazard Materials crews were at the scene to ensure no hazardous chemicals were released by the flames. They determined no such threat existed around 6:15 a.m.

No one was in the building at the time of the fire and no one was hurt.
