PARKERSBURG - A minor chlorine leak at the Claywood Park Public Service District prompted a hazmat response on Thursday afternoon.
No nearby homes were in danger, said Capt. George Orr with the Mineral Wells Volunteer Fire Department. The chlorine leaked from a 150-pound cylinder in an enclosed space, Orr said.
The leak, discovered at 3:06 p.m. and reported to 911, happened near the valve area where small amounts were being vented into the room, said Shawyne Brabham, assistant manager of the Claywood Park Public Service District.

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (June 18, 2015)‰?? Troopers with Indiana State Police responded to a possible meth lab explosion at a Vigo County house Thursday afternoon.
Authorities said the incident occurred inside a detached garage at a residence in the 5500 block of North Clinton Street.
Police said resident 37-year-old David Stewart was inside the garage when the explosion occurred. They said his two children were inside the house. One child ran next door for help following the blast. The children were not injured.
The garaged engulfed in flames and was extinguished by firefighters. Stewart was airlifted to Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment for extensive chemical and thermal burns, said police.
A search of the home revealed numerous items commonly associated with methamphetamine production and a ‰??one pot‰?? meth lab inside the garage.

40 PEOPLE, MOSTLY CHILDREN SICKENED AFTER POSSIBLE CHEMICAL EXPOSURE AT ANTIOCH WATER PARK
Tags: us_CA, public, release, injury, chlorine
ANTIOCH (CBS SF) ‰?? About 40 people, mostly children, fell ill Thursday afternoon due to a possible chemical exposure at an East Bay water park.
At 2:29 p.m., emergency crews responded to reports of a child complaining of respiratory problems after swimming at Antioch Water Park, located at 4701 Lone Tree Way, according to a fire inspector with Contra Costa Fire Protection.
‰??We just heard people screaming, saying their throat burned,‰?? Marquan George told KPIX 5.
The chemical exposure may be due to excessive chlorine that leaked into the pool, Fire Inspector Lisa Martinez said.
As of 4 p.m., 10 to 15 people had been taken to the hospital, Martinez said.
Parents arrived at the park to pick up their children.

OSHA FINES OKLAHOMA DRILLING FIRM OVER FATAL RIG FIRE
Tags: us_OK, industrial, follow-up, death, other_chemical
U.S. Department of Labor on Wednesday cited Lamont, Okla.-based Dan D Drilling Corp. with 10 violations in connection with a December 2014 drilling rig fire that killed three rig workers and seriously injured two others.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration said an open-flame heater on the floor of the rig likely sparked the fire. The accident followed 18 months after OSHA cited the company for allowing the use of an open-flame heater in an earlier incident.
Representatives from Dan D Drilling did not return phone calls to The Oklahoman on Wednesday.
Kelsey Bellah, 27, and Gary Keenan, 26, died at the scene of the December 2014 fire. Mark Pittman Jr., 26, died from his burns 16 days later. Two others were hospitalized because of burns from the incident.
‰??Three young men died because Dan D Drilling again allowed the use of an open-flame heater,‰?? David Bates, OSHA‰??s area director in Oklahoma City, said in a statement Wednesday. ‰??The heater probably started the fire. The company knew this was hazardous, but chose to ignore the hazard.‰??
OSHA cited the company with two willful, seven serious and one repeated violation. The willful violations were for using an open-flame heater on the rig floor and for failing to provide and ensure that employees were wearing flame-resistant clothing.

BELEWS CREEK, N.C. -- Firefighters are on the scene of a chemical spill after a tanker overturned in Belews Creek Wednesday.
The crash happened at Goodwill Church Road and Highway 158. Investigators said a tanker truck carrying Hexylene Glycol overturned and pinned inside. Crews had to extricate him from the vehicle. The driver was taken to the hospital.
No other information has been released on the driver.
A Forsyth County firefighter was also taken to the hospital after coming into contact with the chemical from the tanker.
Investigators said they have stopped the leak. A regional hazmat team is on its way to determine the exact chemical.
Winston-Salem IAFF, Winston-Salem Haz Mat, Belews Creek Volunteer Fire Department, and Walkertown Fire Department are all responded to the scene

UPDATE: CHATTANOOGA FIREFIGHTERS RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL AFTER CHEMICAL FIRE
Tags: us_TN, industrial, fire, injury, other_chemical
The three Chattanooga firefighters who were taken to the hospital after battling a fire at NA Industries near Amnicola Highway have been treated and released.
One firefighter was taken to Erlanger Medical Center due to possible chemical exposure. Another two had minor complaints and were taken to the hospital for observation, fire department spokesman Bruce Garner said.
The fire was out at 11:35 a.m. and the fire department left the scene around 12:45 p.m.
Officials say the blaze was an acrylic acid fire which briefly evacuated the plant.
Chief Danny Hague with fire department said officials do not believe there was any chemical release off site. No plant employees were injured and none were exposed, he said.
Authorities said there appears to be no threat to the public.

TANKER OVERTURNS ON U.S. 158 (VIDEO)
Tags: us_NC, transportation, release, response, other_chemical
WALKERTOWN State highway patrol officers are trying to determine what caused a tanker truck to overturn on U.S. 158 near Goodwill Church Road Wednesday afternoon, causing its chemical load to spill onto the road.
The tanker was carrying a mixture of hexamine and water, said Command Officer Ken Kennedy with Belews Creek Fire and Rescue.
Hexamine is a chemical used to make other chemical compounds such as plastics, pharmaceuticals and rubber additives, according to several websites. It also can be used as a food additive and to produce plastic explosives.
Battalion Chief Sandy Shepherd of the Winston-Salem Fire Department said the chemical has a flammable component, but the batch the tanker was hauling was diluted and didn‰??t pose a fire threat.

FEDS: NEW STUDIES BACK WATER DECISIONS AFTER CHEMICAL SPILL
Tags: us_WV, public, follow-up, environmental, other_chemical
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Federal officials say studies reinforce advisement that people could use tap water shortly after a chemical spill in West Virginia last year.
The National Toxicology Program on Tuesday evaluated updated findings about the chemicals that spilled.
Some studies used pregnant rats, zebrafish and nematoads. Others used cellular, molecular and computer modeling to identify potential health effects.
State Health Officer Dr. Rahul Gupta called the results reassuring.
The January 2014 spill in Charleston tainted water for 300,000 people. Using limited research, federal officials quickly crafted a standard about when water was safe to use again. A ban was lifted after four to 10 days.
Still, people visited hospitals with symptoms from rashes to nausea.

SOMETIMES BOMB SQUAD IS CALLED IN
Tags: us_MN, public, discovery, response, other_chemical, waste
Twice in the past year the Becker County Household Hazardous Waste site has called in the bomb squad to dispose of potentially explosive chemicals.
Both involved peroxides used as a bonding agent in auto body repair fillers. The most recent was about a pint of highly explosive methyl ethyl ketone peroxicide.
It arrived at the HHW shed in the form of two half-full plastic pint bottles that were in a box of other chemical products, said Sandy Gunderson, who handles the HHW program for Becker County Environmental Services.
The HHW building is located in a corner of the County solid waste transfer site.
She called the sheriff‰??s office, which notified the state, which dispatched the regional bomb squad out of Crow Wing County.
They disposed of it by starting it on fire, causing an explosion that effectively vaporized the chemical in a gravel pit at the transfer station.

COMPANY: CIRCUIT GLITCH LIKELY CAUSED CHEMICAL PLANT FIRE
Tags: us_PA, industrial, follow-up, environmental, ag_chems, oxygen, runoff
HANOVER, Pa. (AP) - A central Pennsylvania chemical company says preliminary information shows an electrical circuit malfunction likely caused a massive manufacturing plant fire that burned for more than 12 hours.
Miller Chemical and Fertilizer said Monday it‰??s also installed a large above-ground tank to contain runoff and prevent water from entering Slagle Run and Conewago Creek.
Last week, officials said thousands of dead fish had been seen over a 10- to 15-mile span of the creek after the June 8 fire in Conewago, Adams County.
State environmental officials are monitoring Conewago Creek for contaminants. Miller Chemical says the creek‰??s oxygen levels have improved.
Miller Chemical says it manufactures nonhazardous crop protection and nutritional agrochemicals.
