Tags: us_MI, public, release, response, ammonia

FARMINGTON HILLS, MI - Firefighters evacuated the Farmington Hills Ice Arena because of a potentially dangerous chemical leak.

It happened late afternoon on Sunday, June 14. Firefighters told MLive they believe there was a power surge that triggered a relief valve to vent from the anhydrous ammonia tank.

Someone inside the arena called 911 after hearing a loud sound, like an explosion, and smelling chemicals. There was no explosion, but firefighters and EMS evacuated the building immediately and brought in a Hazmat team because of the chemical leak.

Crews also evacuated a church next door and told people living nearby to stay in their homes.

CHEMICAL MIXTURE LIKELY BEHIND EXPLOSION IN CENTRAL FRANCE: REPORT
Tags: France, public, explosion, death, acetone, hydrochloric_acid

PARIS, June 14 (Xinhua) -- The three teenagers killed in an explosion in central France on Saturday likely lost the control of a chemical product mixture they were making, which provoked the explosion, local media reported on Sunday.
Speaking to news channel BFMTV, local Deputy Prosecutor Yves Dubuy said investigations revealed "significant traces of acetone and hydrochloric acid" on the spot and a weapon used for soft air games.
"The assumption of a loss of control over a chemical compound is studied," Dubuy added.
On Saturday afternoon, an explosion hit an abandoned house at Ranchevoux in Bas-en-Basset in central France, killing three teenagers aged 14 to 16.
A fourth victim was seriously wounded, the report added.

Tags: us_GA, industrial, fire, injury, unknown_chemical

CONYERS - A small fire that started on a wood pallet outside at chemical manufacturer BioLab was quickly contained Sunday afternoon, according to Rockdale County Fire Rescue. No employees were injured and no evacuations were required.

Firefighters received the call around 12:45 p.m., according to a RCFR spokesperson. Some chemical residue on wood pallets that were being stored outside reportly caught fire.

The fire was quickly brought under control using a "deck gun" from one of the first responding units. A "deck gun" is a nozzle attached to the top of the fire engine capable of putting large amounts of water on a fire very quickly, according to a RCFR statement.

Six firefighters were sent to Rockdale Medical Center to be checked out for various non-life threatening injuries, including heat related conditions and exposure to chemicals. All were expected to be released Sunday.

According to a statement sent by Fire Chief Dan Morgan, "RCFR and Biolab responders train together during the year on a regular basis to be able to respond and combat these types of incidents quickly. That training was very evident today as the entire incident was kept confined to a small area within the BioLab grounds."
