Here is a detailed description of the workshops

CHEMICAL REACTIVITY HAZARDS, Laboratory Scale, Recognition & Control
Presented by: Neal Langerman, Ph.D., Harry Elston, Ph.D.

The objective of the workshop is to provide participants with the knowledge and skill to screen processes for potential reactive chemistry hazards, recognize when reactive chemistry hazards are present, and implement appropriate controls to reduce the risk of an incident associated with the hazards.  Workshop attendees will review case studies of actual incidents and do screening examples in order to understand the screening and recognition process.  Group discussions of screening methods will allow participants to share their experiences and to evaluate methods for controlling reactivity risks.

LABORATORY WASTE MANAGEMENT

Presented by: Russell Phifer

This comprehensive one-day course will identify the various regulatory requirements that apply to laboratories that generate hazardous waste, as well as provide insight into the options for on-site management and off-site disposal.  Focus will include discussion on recycling/reclamation techniques, economical handling of wastes and liability issues.  Mr. Phifer has over 25 years experience in managing laboratory wastes for academic and industrial laboratories and is a member and former chair of the ACS Task Force on Environmental Health & Safety.

HOW TO BE A MORE EFFECTIVE CHEMICAL HYGIENE OFFICER

Presented by: James Kaufman, Ph.D., Mr. Russell Phifer

Take a close look at the Chemical Hygiene Officer position, and prepare at the same time for the "CHO" Certification exam to be held the next day.  Kaufman and Phifer give a different slant to safety issues in the laboratory, focusing on what you do and how you can do it better.  The presenters bring a wide variety of experience to the table, but the real stars of the workshop are you - past attendees note the interactive approach focusing on their problems, from getting administrators involved in safety to dealing with regulatory concerns.  The course covers all of the content areas of the certification exam (presented on Sunday through NRCC), including a sample test in the same format as the real one.  Whether you are a new Chemical Hygiene Officer or an "old" one, you will find something to put to real use in this fast-paced presentation.  You can request an application packet for the Chemical Hygiene Officer Certification examination by National Registry of Certified Chemists online at nrcc6.org/

THE LABORATORY SAFETY WORKSHOP

Presented by: James Kaufman, Ph.D. or W.H. (Jack) Breazeale, Ph.D.

Scholarships are available – contact scholarships**At_Symbol_Here**labsafetyinstitute.org. for more information

This classic presentation on laboratory safety by the Laboratory Safety Institute (LSI) has been attended by thousands of safety professionals.  With experience in both industrial and academic laboratories, Jim and Jack give a "real world" approach to safety issues in the laboratory.  Their stories are both interesting and pertinent.  Interactive demonstrations help you deal with everything from creative wiring in the lab to administrators without a vision of what it means to have a safe workplace.  This is a highly entertaining and excellent forum to speak openly about safety problems in your workplace.

Using Control Banding & Job Hazard Analysis to Teach Hazard Identification and Risk

Assessment Presented by: Samuella Sigmann and Ralph Stuart

Employers, government agencies and educators recognize that chemistry students and other laboratory workers must acquire the necessary knowledge and skills required to identify hazards and assess chemical risks in the laboratory environment. This workshop will introduce and demonstrate two well-known tools – control banding and job hazard analysis – that can be used to introduce the concepts of hazard identification and risk assessment to students and researchers. Using the ACS document "Identifying and Evaluating Hazards in Research Laboratories" as guidance, this workshop will review the conceptual basis of these methods and provide practical examples of how they can be used in the academic setting. It will also discuss the limits of these methods and discuss when other tools in the ACS document are more appropriately used.
