Occupational Knowledge International (OK International)
Volunteer Opportunity: Industrial Hygienist

April 2015

Occupational Knowledge International (OK International) is a nonprofit organization based in San Francisco that works to build capacity in developing countries around environmental and occupational health. (see http://www.okinternational.org) Airborne silica, generated from large and small-scale mining operations is causing an epidemic of silicosis, cancer, and other lung disease. Silica exposure also increases the risk of acquiring active TB but few global health advocates are focused on silica dust reduction as a prevention strategy.

Opportunity: OK International is seeking an industrial hygienist to conduct air sampling and recommend exposure mitigation measures as part of a small team in representative mines in Africa for a 10-14 day period. The work would likely have to take place in May 2015. All travel and expenses would be covered by OK International.
