Our chemistry dept hired a new person with 50/50 safety & lab support responsibilities. Here's her job description:
Requirements:  MS in Chem or closely related science (Sandhya has a PhD and postdoc experience); Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to interpret scientific/technical terminology are essential.

Purpose:  The Instructional Support Technician will be involved in all aspects of laboratory safety (teaching and research) within the Chemistry Department.  The technician will prepare and submit licensing documents associated with compliance requirements.  In addition, the technician will maintain the Chemical Biology Instrumentation Lab.  This includes record keeping, repairs, maintenance and training of users.

Duties
Safety: 
Maintain safety training records, departmental Chemical Hygiene Plan, departmental Safety website, Department Chemical Inventory, and MSDS links
=B7Serve on Safety Committee
=B7Implement safety policies of the University and Department
=B7Together with the Safety Committee, conduct and keep records on periodic lab inspections and follow-ups
=B7Oversee lab cleanouts and closeouts
=B7Arrange with EH&S for review sessions on safe laboratory practices
=B7Conduct department-specific introductory safety sessions for new faculty, staff and students
=B7Refer to EH&S any respirator requests
=B7With EH&S, oversee monitoring of radiation exposure
=B7Inform faculty and staff of current government safety regulations and trends in laboratory safety
=B7Inspects, and recommends improvements to chemical storage.


Instrumentation:
Inspect, operate, calibrate, maintain, repair and modify instrumentation of the Chemical Biology Instrumentation Lab on a routine basis.  Repairs may be mechanical or electronic in nature and may require collaboration with University shops or instrument manufacturers.
=B7Instruct students on instrument operations. Maintain instrument-training records


Compliance
• In collaboration with Chemistry department faculty, prepare and submit  licensing documents associated with compliance regulations for the use of specific chemicals or radioactive compounds, recombinant DNA, performance of animal studies, and for performance of human studies.
• Maintain records of faculty, staff and student compliance and training.
• Inform faculty, staff, and students of required renewal training.
• Keep current on all policies and requirements regarding compliance issues
