CSB RELEASES VIDEO ON TESORO ACCIDENT

?The Human Cost of Gasoline,? a personal, heart-wrenching video on the Anacortes, Wash., Tesoro refinery accident, was released recently by the Chemical Safety & Hazard Investigation Board (CSB). The four-minute video tells the story of the April 2, 2010, accident through the eyes of Amy Gumbel, sister of Matt Gumbel?one of the seven workers who died in the refinery explosion and fire. The video explores the loss of a loved one in a tragic chemical accident and how it affects a family. Matt Gumbel, 34, was working as an operator that night, performing maintenance on the refinery?s naphtha hydro-treater unit. Unknown to him and other workers, a heat exchanger in the unit had been severely weakened over several years, and it exploded without warning, causing a massive fire that engulfed him and six others. Matt Gumbel succumbed after 22 days in intensive care. The video concludes with Amy Gumbel?s appeal for tougher state and federal safety laws.

FIRE RAZES LAB AT MARANDA

A fire yesterday burned down a physics laboratory at Maranda High School in Siaya county. Students said the 3am Sunday fire started when students were asleep. The students were awoken by smoke that engulfed the building.

The students and their teachers did not salavage anything from the laboratory. This is the fifth fire incident at the school since June last year. Efforts to seek comments from the principal Boaz Owino was futile.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) ? State health officials are seeking patient data from physicians who might have treated people affected by the Jan. 9 chemical spill.

The Charleston spill contaminated 300,000 people's tap water in nine counties.

Bureau for Public Health commissioner Dr. Letita Tierney says in a news release that the state is reaching out to health care providers to obtain data on any patient who might have been exposed to the contaminated water.

Letters have been sent to 865 physicians in the nine-county region asking them to voluntarily submit the data.

Tierney says the bureau's focus has shifted from response to recovery.

The recovery phase also will include results of a federal chart review of patients who visited emergency departments between Jan. 9 and Jan. 23.

PENDLETON, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky State Police say a tractor-trailer at the Pilot Truck Stop in Pendleton is leaking a small amount of chemical.

KSP says the spill has triggered a small evacuation that does not include any homes. The radius is only 800 feet.

The truck is leaking ethylenediamine, an organic compound with an ammonia-like odor. The chemical is used in the production of various other industrials like cleaning agents.

Henry and Oldham County fire and HazMat teams are working to contain and clean the spill.

Kentucky State Police say the spill is small and should be contained, but it may take a few hours.

SHOULD STATE, CITIES EASE FIRE SAFETY STANDARDS TO ELIMINATE CHEMICAL FIRE RETARDANTS?

To prevent fatal fires, regulators have required manufacturers for decades to make chairs, couches, and other furniture that will not easily burst into flames, leading many companies to use flame retardants in their products.

But now, with fatal fires rare, many environmental and public health advocates are seeking less stringent flammability rules to eliminate the use of toxic chemicals to resist or slow the spread of fire. Fire-related deaths in the United States plunged more than 60 percent over the past 35 years, according to the US Fire Administration.

In Massachusetts, the Board of Fire Prevention and Department of Fire Services are revising its fire code to ease flammability standards for upholstered furniture because of the hazards of flame-retardant chemicals, some of which have been linked to cancer, neurological disorders, and reduced fertility.

Environmental and public health advocates say easing flammability standards would eliminate the use of flame retardants. Instead of requiring furniture to resist fire when ignited with a lighter or candle, they say, fire codes should adopt a less-rigorous smolder test, which simulates a smoldering cigarette dropped on an upholstered seat to test how quickly the furniture catches on fire.

SLIDESHOW: Lacey's Spring meth bust

Deputies responded to a mobile home on the 100 block of Amherst Drive, Thursday night, after receiving complaints about a strong odor coming from the residence. Agents said they observed a "chemical cloud" coming from the home when they arrived at the scene.

Authorities found an active one-pot meth lab, a gas generator and other components used to make meth inside the home.

Firefighters with the Lacey's Spring Volunteer Fire Department were called out to the scene to decontaminate the offenders.

An oven explosion has sparked an investigation into a suspected drug lab at an Auckland home.

One man is in police custody and police have confirmed there are drugs in the Point Chevalier house.

Officers from the clandestine laboratory team searched the property about 10.30am Saturday.

It followed a police chase where a man from the property attempted to flee down the street.

Residents said they saw the man running off, and that he was quickly detained.

Fire crews have blocked off the street and have inspected the house. There was limited structural damage and no injuries after the explosion.

Neighbours described a huge bang as the oven exploded just after 9am.

"It was an almighty crash. We certainly got a bloody big fright," neighbour Ash Brown said.

SAUGUS, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A propane tank leak that caused Route 1 in Saugus to shut down Thursday morning also injured one man, sending him to the hospital.

The leak happened at around 10 a.m. at the construction site of the Walmart being built, according to Saugus fire chief Don McQuaid. An employee of the gas company contracted by the construction company got hit with gas when the connection at the top of two, thousand-gallon tanks broke.

Officers evacuated the site and closed Route 1 while cleanup was underway. The employee, though awake and alert, suffered burns on his body and was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital. His condition was unknown.
