THE BADGER HERALD • CHEMICAL LEAK AT ENGINEERING HALL NOW CONTAINED [UPDATED]

Tags: us_WI, laboratory, release, response, other_chemical

An unidentified chemical spill was reported at Engineering Hall today at 12:15 p.m. The University of Wisconsin Police Department responded along with the Madison Fire Department to the investigate the call.

Update 2 (1:50 p.m.): Lovicott said the spill occurred during a filter replacement on a tank when a small amount of the hazardous chemical arsine leaked out. He said although the spill triggered the alarm, the arsine leakage does occasionally happen with such filter replacements.

?It turns out the leak was contained, and there really wasn?t a hazard,? Lovicott said. ?The building was evacuated just as a precaution so we could figure out what exactly happened and how much leaked.?

As of now the building has been deemed safe and has reopened, Lovicott said

FIRE DEPT: BUILDING EVACUATED AFTER CHEMICAL POURED DOWN DRAIN

The Oklahoma City Fire Department says a spilled chemical forced several businesses to be evacuated Thursday morning.

The Fire Department and HAZMAT were called to the 12300 block of N. May Ave after several employees complained of getting sick because of an odor. The call came in at 10:10 AM Thursday.

According to the fire department, an employee at the dry cleaner located in the strip mall spilled a chemical. The chemical is not hazardous but is flammable so crews evacuated the building.

One person was treated at the scene for but was not transported.

The building was evacuated for about an hour as the scene was investigated and cleared.

CHEMICAL RELEASE FORCES EVACUATION OF 3 RSM BUILDINGS

A chemical spill in a Rancho Santa Margarita industrial area this morning has caused the evacuation of several buildings, the Orange County Fire Authority reported.

The incident happened at 9:13 a.m. in the 22900 block of Arroyo Vista, said Capt. Dave Spencer.

A business owner was processing a chemical which mixed with the moisture in the air to cause a release of a potentially hazardous gas, Spencer said.

He didn?t know the exact chemical, but it was a corrosive that is not supposed to mix with water or moisture.

Hazmat crews are on scene.

?We have stopped the processing. We?ve evacuated the building itself and the surrounding buildings,? Spencer said.

CITING EXPLOSIONS, LAB SAFETY HOT TOPIC AT TEXAS TECH BOARD OF REGENTS MEETING

The message was clear: Texas Tech officials need to bring down the hammer on laboratory safety.

And for good reason.

At the board?s regular meeting on Thursday, Feb. 27, Kimberly Turner, chief audit executive with the Tech system, presented the Board of Regents? audit committee with findings from an investigation into lab safety procedures across the campus.

According to Turner, Tech is in the midst of a cultural shift toward promoting safety, but not every professor is on board. Turner said a very small percentage of Tech faculty weren?t on board with measures put in place after a series of explosions rocked the campus.

?I think we probably have a few that would say something like: ?I?ve been doing research for 30 years in this same laboratory and nothing?s ever happened, so we must be fine,? Turner told the committee.

Regent Rick Francis didn?t seem pleased with the news.

?When I first heard this I was shocked,? Francis said. ?We need a safe environment. We want them safe.?

Francis implored Tech officials to regularly report faculty compliance with procedures adopted after a series of explosions tarnished Tech?s reputation for lab safety.

NO NEW LEAK FOUND IN GILBERT NEIGHBORHOOD WHERE BLAST OCCURRED

GILBERT, AZ (CBS5) -
Gilbert Fire Department hazmat crews on Thursday returned to the neighborhood where an explosion severely burned a landlord Feb. 9, but found no natural gas leak.

A Gilbert Fire Department spokesman said the crews returned about 11 a.m. after a new report of a natural gas odor in the neighborhood in the area of Warner and Val Vista roads.

Jason Nelson suffered burns over more than 80 percent of his body when he lit a cigarette in the garage of a rental house where one of his tenants lived. He was called to the house by the renter to investigate a natural gas odor.

The lighter ignited the explosion despite no natural gas source at the house.

Firefighters initially thought the source of the explosion was a pile of rags that contained paint-thinner fumes in the garage of the house at 1914 E Palomino Dr. about 4 p.m., according to Brian Ruffentine of the Gilbert Fire Department.

As many as 24 homes were ordered to evacuate while Southwest Gas investigated the source of the leak.

Southwest Gas found and capped at least one leak, and on Monday said the last three evacuated homes were ready for residents to return. The residents had been staying at hotels since the explosion.

EXPLOSION AT CHEMICAL PLANT IN BOP

Emergency services from across the Bay of Plenty have been summoned to a chemical plant at Mt Maunganui after an explosion.

On the scene are also two specialised decontamination units, one of which has come from Rotorua.

Black plumes of smoke were seen rising from the site at around 5:30pm.

Fire Communications shift manager Steve Smith says the fire's under control.

"We got a phone call from a member of the public to say there was an explosion prior to the fire, but we've had no indication from our guys that that took place. But they're still fighting the fire," he says.

PRICHARD, Ala. (WALA) Prichard Mayor Troy Ephiram said elected officials and his office received an influx of complaints recently about a foul chemical odor.

The Alabama Department of Environmental Management said parts of Eight Mile are contaminated with mercaptan, the chemical added to natural gas to help you detect a leak.

The department linked the chemical to Mobile Gas and has ordered it to clean it up. The gas company set-up an abatement system in a wooded area off Ivaloy Drive.

After Ephriam contacted ADEM about the problem the mayor said he learned details of what may have happened.

?There may have been a breach of the treatment system that is responsible for pulling the mercaptan contamination out of the groundwater,? said Ephriam. ?That breach caused an additional release into the air which caused a lot of heightened concerned as to whether or not the problem was coming back as opposed to being resolved.?

Mobile Gas is not commenting on the matter citing a case in litigation.

HAZMAT Crews Respond to Chemical Spill at ODOT in W. Columbus

COLUMBUS (Ken Hines) -- HAZMAT crews have downgraded a Wednesday morning chemical spill at the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) to a minor incident.

The small hydrochloric acid spill occurred in a second-floor laboratory at the W. Broad Street facility at approximately 8:30 a.m., leading to a large, immediate response from the Columbus Division of Fire.

Medics examined an employee whose clothing was splattered with the chemical -- which is used to test asphalt -- and determined that no injury had occurred.
