Mishandling of a chemical used to kill rodents is believed to be responsible for the evacuation of Port Taranaki on Monday.
Fire crews were called to the port just after 1pm when "smoke" began pouring from the hull of the wheat-carrying cargo ship Poavosa Wisdom.
However, New Plymouth Fire Service area commander Pat Fitzell said the smoke was actually a chemical reaction after water came into contact with the chemical aluminium phosphide, a commonly used fumigant to kill rodents in stored grains.
"Aluminium phosphide comes in a sausage form and the crew dragged it across the deck and that is when it started fuming. So they put it in a drum in their hold. They must have thought it was on fire and some water was introduced. That's what we believe," Mr Fitzell said.
He understood it was unusual for the cargo ships to carry the chemical on the "high seas".

CHEMICAL SPILL AT AUSTRALIA POST CENTRE

At least one person has been taken to hospital and eight others have been treated by paramedics after a chemical spill at the Australian Post International mail centre in Sydney.
More than a litre of a corrosive solvent leaked from a package in the customs mailing room at 5.40pm, prompting the evacuation of 150 people at the the sorting centre in Granville, Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Ian Krimmer said.
Superintendent Krimmer said the type of solvent had not been identified.
A woman aged in her 40s was taken to Westmead Hospital with breathing problems. She is in a stable condition and undergoing further toxicology tests, an ambulance spokeswoman said. A further eight staff were treated at the scene. The site has been sealed off but will reopen shortly.

Firefighters have left the scene of a chemical spill caused by Monday's earthquake and handed control of the "contaminated site" to Palmerston North City Council.
Fire service Manawatu Assistant Area Commander Rodger Calder said firefighters had removed a number of chemicals from the property at Ilford Pl in Awapuni.
These were the most likely candidates to cause the fumes in the garage that sent three people to hospital after Monday's 6.2 magnitude tremor.
The trio suffered irritation of their eyes and throats after entering the garage on Monday evening.
Firefighters were called to the scene where they cordoned off the building.
They spent yesterday at the scene too after finding what Mr Calder called unexpected readings at the garage.
Mr Calder said he was still unsure what had caused the problems on Monday.
The garage contained numerous gardening chemicals, some of which were not labelled.

ADAMS COUNTY, Pa. - A tractor trailer chemical fire at the Knouse Foods plant in Orrtanna sent nine people to the hospital and caused numerous challenges for emergency responders Tuesday morning.
Emergency crews were first called to the plant around 8:30 a.m. after a tractor trailer carrying chemicals caught fire.
Units from volunteer fire companies in Cashtown, Fairfield and Gettysburg were initially dispatched to the incident. At the time, units did not know exactly what sort of materials were in the trailer, owned by a contractor at the Knouse facility. Around 8:48 a.m. the company advised Adams County 911 that the trailer was holding a product known as spectra-shield and the Material Safety Data Sheet provided showed a primary ingredient of the product was toluene.
The Material Safety Data Sheet indicated toluene is highly flammable, and that the smoke burning from toluene can cause irritation to exposed skin and eyes.
Due to the large quantity of smoke burning from the trailer, as well as the strong winds, the Adams County Department of Emergency Services announced anyone within one-half mile of the Knouse facility remain in their homes, residence, or work place with windows and doors shut.

WASTE ACIDS EXPLOSION IN MN

DASSEL ? No injuries were reported after a sealed chemical container ruptured Monday afternoon at Spectralytics, 145 Third St. S., in Dassel.
Meeker County Sheriff Jeff Norlin said in a news release that sheriff?s deputies, the Dassel Fire Department, Dassel Rescue and Gold Cross Ambulance responded at 4:16 p.m. to Spectralytics for a report of an explosion in the chemical department.
There were no reported injuries, but Gold Cross Ambulance was paged and Spectralytics employees were evacuated as a safety precaution.
Norlin said a Spectralytics chemical engineer was pouring used acids into a 55-gallon waste container when a reaction occurred, causing the sealed container to rupture. Spectralytics arranged for a private hazardous material company to remove the chemicals.
There was no damage to the Spectralytics building or equipment. Spectralytics did suspend shifts until the cleanup is completed.

A second chemical was identified in a leak that recently contaminated the drinking water of nearly 300,000 West Virginians, according to Amy Shuler Goodwin, a spokeswoman for Governor Earl Ray Tomblin.
The chemical, known as "PPH," was held in the same container that was originally discovered leaking at Freedom Industries, a storage tank farm on the Elk River, Goodwin explained.
"It is absolutely absurd that we did not have this information from day one from this company," Goodwin said.
Mike Dorsey, an official with the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, was informed of the situation Tuesday morning. A Freedom Industries representative handed him a document that indicated the detection of PPH?a chemical typically used to make a liquid more fluid, Goodwin said.
Dorsey estimates the container held approximately 300 gallons of PPH?about five percent of the tank's contents, Goodwin said. The container mostly stored crude MCHM, the chemical that contaminated the Elk River.
Goodwin said as of Tuesday evening, crews with the West Virginia National Guard were testing 20 water samples in the previously affected areas for PPH. As was the case for MCHM, the interagency team had to develop a new testing methodology for PPH.

A bomb squad detonated a hazardous chemical that was removed from Bridon American wire manufacturer in Hanover Township on Monday.
Hanover Township Fire Department, a Hazmat team and the Scranton Police bomb squad responded to New Commerce Boulevard in the industrial park around 1:45 p.m.
Hanover Township Fire Chief Jeff Tudgay said an employee at Bridon American discovered an acid-like substance.
"When the acid crystallizes, it becomes very explosive and unstable," he said.
The bomb squad used a remote device to remove the powder and took it away from buildings in the area to detonate it.
Bridon American was evacuated, and the roadway in industrial park was shut down for nearly two hours.

Fire crew members exposed to a gas leak onboard a ship docked in Port Taranaki have been taken to hospital.
The port is in lockdown tonight after a 200 litre drum of chemicals leaked and turned into hazardous gas aluminium phosphide onboard the Poavosa Wisdom this afternoon.
Five of the 21 crew members evacuated from the ship have been taken to Taranaki Base Hospital for observation.
The Fire Service say the gas can be harmful.
"When it gets into the respiratory system it can make you feel very sick, nausea, dizzy, tingly lips and what have you," said New Plymouth Fire Service Cameron Gillespie.

Hazmat crews responded to a Bradenton animal clinic after workers complained of "respiratory discomfort" Sunday.

Bradenton Fire Battalion Chief Dan Harris tells Fox 13 Palmetto police were called to assist with two stray dogs.
The dogs were transported to Manatee County Animal services in Palmetto. Workers noticed signs of illness and transported the dogs to Desoto Animal Clinic for treatment.
"As they were treating the dogs, they started experiencing some respiratory discomfort and as a result called us due to the chemical exposure," said Harris of the fire/hazmat response."The reaction people were having with it and also a description of a marking on one of the dogs was very consistent with pepper spray."
