The U.S. shale gas boom is reverberating across Britain?s chemical industry, the nation?s second-largest export earner.

The 20-billion pound ($32 billion) chemicals business is losing sales to lower-cost competitors such as in the U.S., where new supplies from domestic shale drilling have reduced prices for natural gas, the fuel used in making chemicals such as plastics. By 2020 the chemicals industry in the U.S. will be 21 percent larger than in Europe, from near parity now, according to the American Chemistry Council.

The price of gas, also used to make electricity, in the past month averaged about two-thirds less in the U.S. than in Britain, the steepest discount in five years. That?s giving Americans an edge over U.K. chemicals makers such as Ineos AG, the largest. BASF SE (BAS), India?s Tata Chemicals Ltd. and Lotte Chemical Corp. (011170) of South Korea have closed plants in Britain this year.

CINCINNATI -- An explosion and fire at a local business in Winton Place Wednesday night required the assistance of HAZMAT.

District Fire Chief Rob McWilliams said the blast happened shortly after 11 p.m. at Environmental Enterprises Inc., located at 4650 Spring Grove Avenue.

Employees told fire crews arriving at the scene an explosion and fire occurred in a flammable liquid storage area inside the building.

Investigators say the sprinkler system went off and contained the fire to one barrel.

Crews quickly extinguished the fire and isolated the burning barrel.

All employees were evacuated safely and no injuries were reported.

irefighters from across the San Gabriel Valley and Los Angeles County responded to a HazMat situation early on December 9, 2013, which required the evacuation of nearly 200 employees from nearby industrial companies.

Monrovia fire officials told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune that a three unknown chemicals had been mixed together to create a cocktail of hazardous gas.

The chemicals have since been identified as cyclo aliphathic resin, boron trifluoride, and ancamine.

At least 50 of the evacuated employees complained of headaches and nausea from the fumes. Some were taken to hospital.

The fumes, carried through a ventilation system, originated at Air Logistics Corp, which mixes chemicals as part of its manufacturing processes in Southern California.

AMSTERDAM - NewsChannel 13 now knows the name of the substance that caused a hazmat situation at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.
Police say it's Malathion. That's an agricultural pesticide used for controlling insects on crops and mosquitoes in large areas.
The ER was evacuated Monday afternoon after the hospital says a woman brought a dangerous substance inside. They say the woman came to the ER after she consumed the substance, but when she brought it inside, it posed a threat to other patients.

CARGILL BETS BIG ON 'GREEN CHEMICAL' TO FILL ELECTRICAL TRANSFORMERS

WASHINGTON ? For the past few years, the U.S. Department of the Interior has tested the effectiveness of electrical transformers that use vegetable oil instead of mineral oil to boost power production while lowering the threat of fires and toxic spills.

Now, the agency plans a ?very large project? using the green technology that Minnetonka-based Cargill Inc. helped perfect.

?Our transformers sit on decks overlooking the flow of beautiful Western waterways,? said Bill Heckler, an engineer with the department?s Bureau of Reclamation, which operates hydroelectric dams. ?We fear ruptures or fires that will drop large quantities of oil into rivers.?

Easing that fear helped Cargill win a Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award on Wednesday in the nation?s capital.

Labels on everyday household products in Vermont will include ?chemicals of high concern? in a law proposed for the upcoming legislative session.

Identification of molecules with a strong likelihood of posing health risks to humans ? and ultimately phasing them out of the marketplace ? will probably take several years, but would yield long-term benefits, scientists, business leaders and legislators announced at a forum at Main Street Landing in Burlington.
