A two-alarm chemical fire broke out at Standard Pressed Steel Technologies, located at 301 Highland Avenue, Aug. 14, according to Abington Fire Marshal Ken Clark.

The incident occurred at 1:02 p.m. inside a ?trailer-like building? situated on the south side of the building, he said. This trailer houses specialized chemicals used for plating and painting materials, and Clark believes that static electricity ignited some of the chemical vapors in the building causing the fire. However, Clark said the cause is still under investigation.

CORNWALL, Ont. Emergency workers are on the scene of an early morning explosion at a BASF chemical plant in Cornwall, Ont.

Police and firefighters responded to the site of the plant (on Wallrich Avenue) just after 6 a.m. this morning.

Although the scale of the explosion is not yet known, workers in the plant were reported to have escaped the building unharmed and there were no immediate reports of any injuries.

Witnesses say roads in the area (around Wallrich Avenue and Seventh Street) are being blocked off by police.

BASF, a global chemical corporation, has roughly 30 employees at its Cornwall plant, which manufactures monomeric and polymeric plasticizers.

NAGPUR: Std IV student Arbaaz Ahmed can't even have liquid food after a mobile phone battery he was playing with exploded in his mouth. Ahmed suffered chemical burns in his throat and mouth and on his hands but is stated to be out of danger.

Arbaaz, 11, was playing with a Chinese-made device's battery at his Tajbagh residence on Sunday night.

"The incident took place around 11 pm. His elder sister, who was in the same room, was shocked when she saw the battery explode and pop out of the boy's mouth. It fell on the bed-sheet that caught fire too. The flames were doused immediately," told the victim's father Ashfaq.

DALLAS -- Incomplete and inaccurate data makes it impossible to determine how many serious chemical accidents like the one that killed 15 people in a Central Texas town this year occur annually in the United States, according to a newspaper report.

The Dallas Morning News (http://dallasne.ws/15lFr4q">http://dallasne.ws/15lFr4q ) found in an analysis of more than 750,000 federal records that even the best national data on chemical accidents is wrong nine times out of 10.

After April's explosion at the West Fertilizer Co., the newspaper began analyzing four federal databases to determine how often serious industrial chemical accidents occur. It concluded there was no way to know because the data was so poor.

"We can track Gross National Product to the second and third decimal, but there is no reliable way of tracking even simple things like how many (chemical) accidents happen," said Sam Mannan, an expert on chemical safety who testified at a congressional hearing on West.

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB)- The Department of Environmental Quality said there was a gas release Friday morning from one of the chemical plants in Baton Rouge, but it was contained shortly after.
....
A DEQ spokesperson said sulfur dioxide and sulfur trioxide leaked from a damaged converter that had to be shut down. A shelter in place order was briefly issued inside the plant, but no injuries were reported.

Officials at Solvay Rodia said the situation was minor and never posed a threat to the public.

"We have a very good safety program in place, this was a minor leak on an exchanger," said Daniel Tate, site manager. "It's just an SO3 cloud that's very visible, so we just wanted to take every precaution we could alerting the agencies early to make sure and we brought it under control very quickly."
