THANE: A labourer was killed and at least three others were injured in a fire following an explosion in a chemical factory in Dombivli town, near here in Maharashtra, early on Monday.

According to an official of Manpada police, the explosion, which followed a massive fire, took place in Chemistar Co. in the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) area of the town, just before 6am.

Clouds of dark smoke were seen billowing from the massive complex, and four fire engines battled to douse the blaze.

Later, four persons were rescued from the disaster site. One man, identified as Pramod Gharat, was declared dead.

A Pensacola man was burned in an explosion at his home near East Burgess Road on Sunday afternoon, Escambia County Emergency Medical Services said.

The 28-year-old man was spraying an unidentified chemical in his yard to kill ants when the chemical ignited for unknown reasons, Escambia Fire and Rescue said.

The man received serious burns in the explosion and was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital.

The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the explosion.

GARLAND - Three firefighters were transported to a hospital after they were exposed to a chemical vapors that led to the evacuation of three nearby businesses Saturday night in the 1500 block of Wall Street in Garland.
The incident began when employees of the Mapei Corporation mistakenly put the wrong chemical into a vat containing another chemical, spurring a reaction and releasing a vapor that was carried by a strong wind outside the building, said Merril J. Balanciere, a spokesman with the Garland Fire Department.
Firefighters and Dallas hazmat were called to the business at about 9 p.m. The first responding firefighters were briefly exposed to the vapors and taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution.
Surrounding roads and three businesses, including a McDonald's restaurant, Conoco station and Super Wok restaurant, were shut down as crews investigated the scene. About two dozen people were evacuated and nearby motels were asked to keep people inside, Balanciere said.

A MAN suffered severe chemical burns to his face when a bucket filled with chlorine products exploded in the state's north this morning.

A Queensland Fire Services spokesperson said a 77-year-old man was mixing chlorine products in a bucket at the Pentland Caravan Park about 8.15am when it exploded.

The man suffered burns to his face and eyes and was taken to the Charters Towers Hospital, west of Townsville.

Several other people complained of headaches from the fumes and were treated at the scene.

Fire crews shut down several gas systems and evacuated the area following the explosion.

RIVER NENE CHEMICAL SPILL COMPANY FINED

A firm has been fined £50,000 after pesticides leaked into a Cambridgeshire river, wiping out thousands of fish.

Safapac, of Orton Southgate, had previously admitted responsibility for the pollution in the River Nene.

It happened last June after vandals turned on the taps from storage tanks, but Peterborough Crown Court heard the incident could have been prevented if the chemicals had been stored securely.

About 5,000 litres of pesticides entered the waterway.

Prosecutor Mark Watson told the court: "Bulk containers containing the chemicals were stored in external bunkers near to the road.

"There was no bunding (dike or barrier) and no secondary containment in case of spills," he said.

"There was an open drain in the storage area and another just outside."

They put their faith in their boss and in OSHA, but mostly in their boss, that workdays will be merely dangerous, not fatal.

But sometimes they still come home dead, the tank workers. Joey Sutter did. He was 36, married, with a son, when he died Dec. 18, 2008.

Within seven months there were two others, all working tanker trucks, all employed by Matthew Bowman, former president of Port Arthur Chemical and Environmental Services, and also Chemical and Environmental Services of Houston.

On Thursday, Matthew Bowman stood at the lectern in a blue and dark wood courtroom in the Beaumont federal courthouse with his hands free, unlike the defendant who preceded him, and pleaded guilty to causing Sutter's death.

Moments before, the mood in the staid court was collegial. Defense counsel joked about ex-wives; the government man mentioned an acquaintance who's become a preacher.

A tractor-trailer that overturned on U.S. 35 near the Buffalo Bridge in Putnam County was carrying about 4,000 gallons of gluteraldehyde, a toxic chemical compound used to sterilize and disinfect medical equipment.

Department of Transportation spokeswoman Carrie Bly says crews are in the process of bringing in a crane to turn the tractor-trailer upright. After they move the truck, HAZMAT crews will suit up and assess how many of the 80 50-gallon barrels are leaking, she said.

Diesel fuel has also leaked onto the road during the accident.

U.S. 35 is expected to be closed for the next six to eight hours for the cleanup, Bly said shortly before 2 p.m.

The St. Louis Park Life Time Fitness on Cedar Lake Road reopened Friday afternoon, following an unspecified chemical leak at the facility earlier in the day.

Crews responded to the fitness center at 8 a.m. Friday, May 10, on reports of a possible chemical leak, evacuating the building and treating three people on scene for possible exposure to the chemical. One additional person had been transported to the Hennepin County Medical Center prior to the evacuation for a possible allergic reaction, which has since been deemed related to the chemical release.

Sterling, Conn. Ñ
A worker at the Austin Powder Co. explosive manufacturing plant was burned Friday after the chemicals he was mixing ignited, officials said.

Joshua W. Thayer, 33, of 44 Easy St., Plainfield, one of four employed by the Cleveland, Ohio-based industrial explosive and accessories manufacturer, was mixing chemicals inside a storage bunker at about 10 a.m. at the plant at 332 Ekonk Hill Road, when a "flash" ignition occurred, officials said.

Thayer was taken to The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich for treatment of non-life threatening chemical burns, Sterling Fire Marshal Jim Sweet said. He later was released.

A Hazmat situation at Memorial Hospital is under control.

Memorial Central Hospital spokesperson says the cause of the hazmat is due to a jet fuel leak from the helicopter fuel storage tank.

It is believed that 200 gallons of jet fuel may have leaked out, but that estimation may actually go up. Fire will remain on the scene for most of the night cleaning up the jet fuel leak.

The incident shut down a portion of the hospital's parking garage but there were no disruptions of any hospital services

ST. PETERS ¥ A chemical explosion in the basement of a St. Peters home shortly after noon today caused major structural damage, fire officials said.

Two men were refinishing a concrete floor in the basement of a three-bedroom ranch at 63 Harvest Point Court, when the fumes ignited, said Scott Freitag, assistant chief of Cottleville Fire Protection District.

Freitag said the men were using a sprayer. They did not use proper ventilation, and the hot water heater was left on, he said.

Neither one of the workers were injured. He said one wall of the home was blown out about 18 inches, the garage door buckled, and the roof over the front porch lifted off its columns, then set back down.

THREE people were taken to hospital after potentially dangerous chemicals were issuing fumes in a chemistry lab at the Glanbia cheese factory in Magheralin.

Two fire appliances from Lurgan and two from Lisburn attended a special service call to the factory at 4pm on Wednesday afternoon.

As a precaution the building was evacuated.

Fire personnel wearing breathing apparatus and gas tight suits entered the room and ventilated the area. Using gas monitoring equipment they monitored the surrounding air.
