Odour gas leaked from a Chemical factory in northern France has wafted as far as Paris.
Residents of north western districts of the capital complained about the leak of consumer gas. The fire fighters responded to their calls and found that they were false alarms.

The leaked gas has a strong odour and is used in the industry for aromatization of products so as to establish a leak in time, officials of the factory said. It is harmless.

The local authorities assured that the concentration of the gas in the atmosphere is not so high, and it has already dispersed.

Hazmat specialists say a suspicious liquid spilled along San Carlos Road on Monday is muriatic acid, a substance commonly used in pool cleaners.

At approximately 1 p.m., Arcadia firefighters responded to a reported hazardous materials spill on San Carlos Road. They found five 1-gallon containers of an unknown liquid strewn along San Carlos Road from Orange Grove Avenue to Arbolada Drive. Three of those containers had begun leaking onto the street.

Firefighters immediately contained the spill to prevent any liquid from getting into the storm drain system.

Meanwhile, hazardous materials experts from Burbank and Glendale identified the substance as muriatic acid and immediately neutralized it. Arcadia Fire Department spokeswoman Beth Stogner said the containers likely fell off of a pool maintenance vehicle.

Smoke filled the sky in Waxahachie after the Magnablend chemical plant caught fire in October 2011.
Texas environmental regulators are expected to vote next week on an enforcement order and $38,500 in fines resulting from the 2011 fire at a chemical-blending plant in Waxahachie.
Magnablend's facility burned down Oct. 3, sending up smoke and fumes that people said made them sick. Water sprayed by firefighters carried

The UC Davis Police Department is conducting a criminal investigation into a chemical explosion that took place in an apartment in Russell Park during the early morning hours last Thursday.

The resident of the apartment, David Snyder, who was temporarily working as junior researcher at UC Davis, was injured during the explosion and was taken to a nearby hospital. Snyder was arrested and booked into the Yolo County Jail on Sunday.

Snyder is currently charged with possession of an explosive, possession of materials with an intent to make explosives and two counts of possession of a firearm on campus, with the potential of more charges. It took 20 hours for the Yolo County Bomb Squad to make the apartment safe. There is no information to suggest that Snyder was plotting any act of terrorism on campus.

"Living at Russell Park for the past two years has not made me feel unsafe. But since the incident of the explosives, it makes me wonder how many other grad students are experimenting with their lab work in a residential environment," said Ayda Soltani, a third-year civil engineering student and resident at Russell Park apartments. "I hope his intentions were not to harm anyone, but he should've [taken] into account that he was risking residents' lives and a lot of children who attend the daycare on the complex. I guess even a PhD degree won't get you common sense."

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas -
Residents in Cy-Fair evacuated their homes Monday evening after a chlorine leak at a water treatment plant, according to authorities.

The Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department said anywhere between six to eight houses on Shady Mill Drive were evacuated after the department went door-to-door to inform residents of a voluntary evacuation.

It started when units responded to a check order in the area and found a strong odor of chlorine in the air at the water treatment plant.

The representative from the plant met fire rescue crews to let them know he was able to turn off the flow of chlorine. The representative was then transported to a local hospital to be treated for exposure.

LUDOWICI, GA - WSAV-TV --
It was a tense morning as the main road through Ludowici was shut down following a chemical spill. ...Ludowici Fire Department Captain Shawn Smith explains, "We actually just kept 'em in place. We just shut the business down - like the pumps and stuff - but we actually kept everybody inside the structures - just until we actually found out what we were dealing with."

..."When we got here, it'd already gotten to a powdered form - it covered about 206 foot - when we first got here - we thought it was like a polystyrene - but it actually turned out to be a black liquor." Which the captain says is a turpentine-like substance...it gave off no fumes or gas - but he says that doesn't mean it couldn't be hazardous, "In the dust form, it does create an inhalation hazard, so just to be on the safe side - that's why the guys moving it right now have masks on and everything like that - we didn't want to take the chance on it."

The cleanup involved breaking up and scraping the material off the roadway. Sand was put down as part of the process to keep the dust down. It's believed the material may have spilled from a truck traveling through the area overnight. Though part of the road remained blocked off through much of the day...nearby businesses were allowed to reopen as soon as authorities determined what they were dealing with. The highway reopened mid-afternoon.

The chemical company Orica says it is confident there will be no lasting health effects among workers struck down with nausea from a mystery odour at its western Sydney warehouse yesterday.

Paramedics and HAZMAT crews were called to the Villawood site yesterday morning after workers detected an odour and said they felt sick and experienced a metallic taste in their mouths.

Seven employees underwent blood tests yesterday afternoon as a precautionary measure and the facility was temporarily shut down.

Orica's spokesman Simon Westaway says up to 4,000 chemicals are stored at the site and he hopes an investigation into the source of the odour will be finalised quickly.

"We are confident that facility will be up and running to full operation in the very near future," he said.

Mr Westaway says the company does not think there are any risks to people living in Villawood.

"Our facility is in an industrial area and we don't believe it would cause any issue for local residents of Villawood," he said.

Orica also met the environmental regulator yesterday over residents concerns about mercury contamination from its Port Botany site.

HAZMAT CALLED FOR ROTTEN ONION TRUCK

A truck filled with rotten onions caused alarm in Gumly Gumly yesterday after a number of triple-0 calls reported a disgusting smell in the suburb.

The culprit was a parked truck in a vacant property off Copland Street that was leaking a brown substance. Wagga police, Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW), HAZMAT and Wagga City Council attended the foul-odoured scene, about 3pm.

Investigations revealed the truck was filled with rotten onions and they had been sitting in the searing 40-plus temperatures for two weeks, causing the vegetables to break down.

Wagga City FRNSW station commander Peter Dwyer described the stench as "pungent" but said no one's eyes watered.

"It was a really pungent smell," he said.

"There was a brown liquid running from the side and rear of the trailer.

"We contained the spill and once it was determined what the substance was, it was decided it was safe to be dispensed of at the tip."

CHICAGO (CBS) - Five firefighters and a resident of a South Side home were taken to hospitals today - because of noxious chemicals on the scene of a fire.

The fire started at about 11:15 a.m. at 8104 S. Campbell Av., and appeared to be a furnace fire, according to the Fire Department. The fire was extinguished, but when firefighters went to open windows in the building to ventilate, they discovered chemicals in a bathtub, which caused respiratory distress.

Five firefighters and one civilian were taken to various local hospitals for treatment, according to the Fire Department. All were reported in stable condition.

The 67-year-old homeowner told Newsradio he had put bleach and water into a bathtub to soak overnight so he could clean it.

A fire department spokesman said ammonia was also involved.
