The wording is not redundant. I have worked in university andresearch institute settings where PIs were not necessarily faculty members.

For those of you in academic settings, particularly in major research institutions –

Are there documented cases of a person being a “PI” and NOT being a faculty member.  That is,a “research professor” is still a faculty member.  Asked another way, is the wording

“faculty and Principal Investigators” redundant?
