Nearly half of the 843 meth labs reported to the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs in 2011 were found within the Tulsa city limits, officials said.

The number of discarded or active labs located by law enforcement set records for the city and the state.

Despite recent expansions of the state's tracking system for pseudoephedrine and law enforcement's efforts to curb the epidemic, more tools are needed, said OBNDD spokesman Mark Woodward.

Tulsa police worked 429 meth labs in 2011, said Tulsa Police Officer Jason Willingham. The total shattered the previous year's record of 323 with an increase of more than 30 percent.

Dyer County Sheriff's narcotics officers arrested a suspect in Evansville on Friday evening who was allegedly carrying a working meth lab inside his coat.

The narcotics officers received an anonymous tip that Gourley was cooking meth and went to patrol the area around 5 p.m. Upon their arrival, they observed Gourley walking next to the railroad tracks and approached him for questioning.

Gourley reportedly began acting nervous and started shaking as the officers questioned him. Growing suspicious, the officers asked Gourley if they could search his person and he gave them consent. Officers then discovered an active meth lab on the inside of his coat pocket. The lab was in the form of a plastic bottle with a chemical reaction taking place inside it.
To prevent a possible explosion of the bottle, Jackson placed it on the ground and loosened the top to relieve the pressure and allowed the reaction to continue. The residents were asked to go back inside their homes while the Meth Task Force was called to remove the hazardous chemicals.

Other deputies arrived and searched a wooded area southwest of B Street where they found an old tire with items used in the production of meth. Those items were photographed and confiscated as evidence.

A truck filled with about 1,000 old equipment batteries caught fire in the Town of Wallkill on Tuesday, completely blocking off a section of Route 211 for six hours with foul-smelling black smoke.

The truck was headed for Revere Smelting and Refining Corp. on Ballard Road at around 10:15 a.m. when the driver noticed the trailer was on fire and pulled onto 84 Lane, the road leading to the Gander Mountain and Middletown Honda businesses.

After the driver reported the chemical fire, multiple fire and emergency responder companies responded, spraying foam and mist onto the truck, then water to douse the rest of the flames, according to town Supervisor Dan Depew.

The fire itself took about 20 minutes to put out, but forced Route 211 traffic to turn around for much of the day.

Emergency responders surrounded the truck with retention pools in order to help contain hazardous chemicals.

A Richland County chemical plant suffered a setback early this morning when a massive transformer caught fire, sending flames shooting into the sky.
Finnchem USA Inc., a chlorine manufacturer, has a large transformer behind its plant at 200 Wateree Station Road near Eastover that contains 2,200 gallons of oil, Columbia-Richland Fire Department spokesman Brick Lewis said.
Firefighters responding to a structure fire call before 2 a.m. found it was not the plant but the transformer that was aflame, the oil burning. It took two hours to get the fire under control with a combination of foam and water. Twenty-three units responded to the call and more than 40 firefighting personnel were on the scene, a precautionary measure in case the fire spread.

RESIDENTS at six homes in Bowraville evacuated this afternoon after a chemical spill at the town's Norco Co-op.

NSW Fire and Rescue crews established a command post near the building in Carbin St around 2.30pm, as firefighters worked to contain the spill.

Firefighters on scene confirmed no staff were injured although two people were decontaminated.

Initial reports to police indicated a bottle of the chemical exploded on the floor of the store after it was dropped.

Police from Macksville and Bowraville were tasked to help residents evacuate from six nearby homes.

The chemical was a toxic pesticide, which is harmful to humans.

The emergency response to the situation has since been downscaled

VALPARAISO ˜ Numerous first-responders to Friday‚s three-train crash became violently ill over the weekend, and possibly from an unexpected source: the food.

Chemicals spilled from the freight trains, including ethanol and diesel fuel, the latter which fed fires sending up enough smoke for emergency personnel to evacuate an area one mile to the north and east of the crash site, northeast of Valparaiso near County Roads 600N and 500E.

Porter County Health Department director of nursing Connie Rudd confirmed the department is investigating complaints of fire and police responders getting sick. „It does not appear to be anything that came from the train,‰ she said.

Sgt. Larry Laflower, spokesman for the Porter County Sheriff‚s Department at the crash site and who also was one of the people who got sick, said he knew of many police officers and firefighters who had the same gastronomical symptoms through Monday. He believes the common denominator was a meal the Red Cross served.

Chemical giant Orica says static electricity is the most likely cause of another fire from a stack at its Newcastle plant overnight.
Hydrogen gas is being vented from a stack at the plant as part of its start-up procedure, with the gas igniting for the second time in three days.
Lighting caused a fire from the stack on Sunday night.
Orica site manager Sean Winstone says there is no risk to the community or the environment.
He says the fire is now out, but there is an ongoing chance that the gas could ignite as the start-up process continues.
Just before 9:30pm (AEDT) residents were sent a text message from Orica saying gas discharge from the stack had reignited but the plant and community were safe.
Despite Orica's assurances, residents have told the ABC they still have concerns about the problem plague plant.

LAFAYETTE, Colo. -- A Lafayette woman is still in the hospital recovering from severe injuries after an explosive device detonated in her car on Saturday.
...
While police are not releasing much information about the investigation, explosive experts are weighing in on the danger of homemade explosives.

"Unfortunately, there are countless ways to make a bomb like this using any household chemical," said Dr. April Hill, with Metropolitan State College of Denver. Dr. Hill specializes in chemical improvised explosive devices, and believes whatever injured Allyson Stone and her husband Chris was a chemical explosion.

According to Dr. Hill, whoever placed the explosive device inside a paper bag that exploded the Stone's car could have made it from any number of instructions available online.

"If you mix the right chemicals in, say, a pop bottle, then the pressure builds," Dr. Hill says. "You're building up heat and gases, so then when the bottle explodes you have hot gases and hot liquids being spewed throughout. That's probably what caused the burns."

ATF Agent Brad Beyersdorf says the device is fairly rare.

"It is something that AFT does investigate on occasion," Beyersdorf says, "but just there's not been a time in the recent past that I could say that has occurred in the Denver area."

SPOKANE, Wash. - Fire and explosions broke out in a storage trailer at Avista utility's equipment yards Monday afternoon on East Mission Avenue. The fire causes plumes of black smoke so large that Spokane fire crews could see them from the South Hill.

Spokane firefighters received the first call about a fire at Avista's headquarters around noon when a construction storage trailer, with a hydraulic lift, was engulfed in flames. Inside the trailer, fire crews said there was PVC piping, construction materials, and several flammable liquids which sparked several explosions.

Several Avista employees tried to put out the fire with fire extinguishers but firefighters said the blaze grew too large, too fast, especially with the flammable liquids inside the trailer.

No one was hurt.

A panel of disease experts released safety guidelines for workers in medical diagnostic laboratories on Thursday, warning that the nation needs a better system for tracking lab accidents.

According to the lengthy report, written by a panel of experts convened by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, aside from requirements in the CDC's Select Agent Program, there is no national system for reporting medical laboratory exposures and the infections that result, CIDRAP News reports.

"(There should be a) voluntary, non-punitive surveillance and reporting system with the potential for anonymity to be implemented in the United States," the panel said, according to CIDRAP News.

Tags: us_CA, laboratory, follow-up, death

series of high-profile incidents at US universities, including the death of Sheharbano (Sheri) Sangji at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2008, has prompted close examination of attitudes towards safety in academic chemistry laboratories.

The death of Sheri Sangji at UCLA and subsequent criminal charges are helping to focus minds on safety in academic labs

© Naveen Sangji
With criminal charges being brought against both the university and Patrick Harran, Sangji's supervisor, there is hope in the chemistry community that these events will drive a cultural shift towards greater responsibility for lab safety, both across the US and throughout the academic world.
For its own part, UCLA has overhauled its safety practices and has established a center for laboratory safety to develop and disseminate safety training programmes and best practice. In a statement, the university described the criminal charges as 'baffling', given its cooperation with the authorities and the outcome of various investigations into the incident.

Residents in Westwood and elsewhere may have been excited to ring in 2012 the night before New Year's Eve, but that night also marked the beginning of a Hazmat situation on High Street.

While filling up the fuel pumps at Westwood Mobil, a significant quantity of gas was spilled during the operation on Dec. 30, Westwood Fire Chief William Scoble said Monday.

But it was days later, on Monday, Jan. 2, when Westwood safety officials responded to the area. The response time was not due to a delay on the part of public safety, but rather because nothing suspicious had been reported until that following Monday.

It was around 4 p.m. that day when tenants at the Coldwell Banker building, which lies adjacent to Westwood Mobil, reported an odor of gas in the building.

The Westwood Fire Department responded to the area and found that gas odors were beyond a normal and safe level inside, and as such evacuated the the employees and tenants of the building.

Upon further investigation, the fumes had been the result of the spilled fuel, which had, by then, seeped into the soil in and around the property near the two buildings, as well as an adjacent residence on Gay Street.

"Upon questioning, the company admitted to a small spill," Scoble said. But the company, he added, reported a spill of less than 10 gallons. After investigating further, officials discovered more than 10 gallons had been spilled.
