CHEMICAL LEAK AT FACTORY IN BOX HILL SOUTH

FIREFIGHTERS are working to contain a chemical leak in Melbourne's east.

A Melbourne Fire Brigade spokesman said about 1000 litres of hypochlorite had leaked at the SCA Hygienefactory in Box Hill South.

He said the leak was contained to a controlled area in a basement of the building and did not pose any threat to nearby homes.

Hazmat teams and eight fire trucks were on site after they received the first calls around 11.40pm.

Hypochlorite is listed as a common ingredient in bleach, disinfectant and common cleaning products.

EXPERIMENT SPARKS ANU CHEMISTRY FIRE

A firehas destroyed part of a chemistry laboratory at the Australian National University (ANU).

Emergency authorities were called to the fire around 1:00pm AEDT to find the Birch Building filled with smoke, and a room on the third level ablaze.

It is believed the fire started during science experiments in a fume cupboard, before spreading into the roof.

Fire and Rescue Commander Danny Brighenti says initial fire fighting efforts were hampered because it was unclear whether chemicals were present.

MARSHALL CO.-- Motorists should watch out for an overturned semi that is blocking travel on Exit 25 on interstate I-24.

Police say Calvert City Exit 25 (westbound ramp to Purchase Parkway southbound) on interstate I-24 is closed. The close happened after a semi overturned. 

The load is HAZMAT corrosive in bulk containers in a box truck. A HAZMAT team has been requested to evaluate the load.

CHRISTMAS DAY BLAZE IN BURNABY

There was a potentially dangerous fire at a chemical unit on 4600 Byrne Road in Burnaby Sundayafternoon.

Though several explosionswere reported, it appeared that the Burnaby Fire Department was able to bring the conflagration into control fairly quickly.
No flames were visible at the site by around 5 p.m., but pending fire crew clearance the area remained closed to the public. Details about the nature and cause of the fire are still awaited.

FIRE crews were called to an explosion at an industrial unit in Verwood on Thursday afternoon.

Crews from Verwood, Ferndown, Ringwood and the Environmental Support Unit from Poole arrived at Ebblake Industrial Estate just after 4.30pm and 25 firefighters tackled the blaze.

The fire involved a small chemical cleaning plant which hadmalfunctioned, causing a small explosion and a fire involving chemicals.

METH LAB CLEANUP COSTS SOARING IN NORTHEAST OHIO CITIES

AKRON, Ohio - It cost hundreds of thousands of state and local tax dollars to clean up methamphetamine labs in 2011, according to Ohio officials. 

There have been more than 300 meth labbusts in Ohio during 2011, said Eve Mueller, a spokeswoman for the Ohio Attorney General's office.

Mueller said it costs about $1,800 per lab to dispose of the chemicals used to make methamphetamine.

A state police hazardous material team removed methamphetamine equipment from a Lansford apartment in the 300 block of E. Ridge Street Thursday afternoon.

A cleaning crew hired by the property owner discovered the drug-making equipment in a duplex apartment, and the owner contacted police around 11:30 a.m., police said.

Lansford police officer Brian Horos said state police removed several bottles coated with a white powdery substance, residue left over from the drug-making operation. Horos said it appeared as if batches of the drug had been made in the bottles, a method known on the street as "shake 'n bake" or "one pot" method.

A hazardous materials incident at San Jose's Oakridge Mall has been declared under control, a fire department spokesman said.

A moviegoer reported a hazardous vapor coming from cleaning materials in a bathroom at the movie theater on the second floor of the mall on Blossom Hill Road at about 2 p.m., Capt. Mike Van Elgort, a spokesman for the fire department, said.

Firefighters responded and evacuated dozens of people from the entire second floor of the mall.

Police are investigating a small explosion inside The Empire Mall on Thursday night believed to be caused by a plastic pop bottle full of household chemicals.

Police were called to the mall at 8:41 p.m.
Liquids sprayed from the burst up to 15 feet, according to a police news release. The chemicals were mixed in a way in which they eventually would explode, Kooistra said.

The bottle was placed in a plant area of the food court. The only damage found was to pots that held the plant, Kooistra said.
