Addicted to methamphetamine, Todd A. Laudenbach was brewing it in a Lower Nazareth Township hotel when he set off the smoke alarm.

Authorities arrived and arrested him, the culmination of seven months of trouble for Laudenbach that a Northampton County prosecutor, James Augustine, on Thursday labeled a "one-man crime spree."

"Unfortunately, Todd is not a proficient chemist," said defense attorney Matthew Goodrich, as his client faced sentencing after pleading guilty to a slew of mostly minor charges that included meth manufacturing, risking a catastrophe, terroristic threats, simple assault and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

Authorities are evacuating the entire town of Tiskilwa following a major train derailment overnight that left multiple tanker cars exploding, according to fire officials and area residents.

Tiskilwa is a town of about 800 people located about 8 miles south of Princeton and 115 miles west of Chicago.

"It's a mess," said Mike McComber, owner of the Indian Valley Inn, a restaurant-bar where many town residents were taking refuge. "A quarter to a half mile of cars derailed. Many of them are on fire.

"Everytime one of them explodes, it sounds like a bomb is going off. Three have gone off so far."

At least six cars on the 112-car train were burning, and officials were worried about expanding liquid vapor explosions, said Capt. Steve Haywood of the Ottawa Fire Department. The fire still had not been brought under control by 5:15 a.m. and it probably would be permitted to burn out on its own he said. It was unclear how many cars derailed.

BIRMINGHAM (AP) ˜ A Birmingham fire official says five students and one teacher were taken to the hospital as a precaution after odors from sewer work outside wafted into a high school.

Birmingham Fire Chief Mike Metz says a construction crew was working on a sewer outside Seaholm High School on Thursday afternoon, and the building's ventilation system sucked in some of the odor. Metz says the students and the teacher complained of feeling nauseous.

Metz says the crew was working for Oakland County relining sewers, and the smell came from a resin they were using.

The odor affected between 20 and 25 classrooms at the school, which has 1,350 students.

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- About 30 gallons of pesticide required Hazmat cleanup following a collision between a car and a tractor Wednesday near Hastings, and the driver of the car faces charges.

The crash happened on State Road 207 around 9 a.m.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the tractor was southbound, partially in the shoulder, partially in the right lane. The tractor was properly marked with a "slow-moving vehicle" reflector and was traveling 15-18 mph.

A car driven by 35-year-old Babetta R. Johnson failed to slow down or move over, and ran into the back of the tractor, which was towing a fumigator trailer.

A graduate research assistant was sent to University Hospital before noon Wednesday after injuries resulting from a chemical reaction in the Chemistry Building.

MU spokesman Christian Basi said details on the incident are vague at this point, but he emphasized the incident was a reaction rather than an explosion.

Columbia Fire Department Battalion Chief James Weaver said there was no fire.

"There's not much to tell besides that it was a medical emergency," he said. "We treated the individual and then transported the individual to the hospital."

The graduate student injured by the reaction suffered from injuries to the hand. Officials from MU Environmental Health and Safety are currently investigating the incident.

"We're trying to determine what happened, why it happened and if it can be prevented in the future," Basi said. "Could this have been something that could have been prevented?"

THE Premier, Barry O'Farrell, has apologised for the stress caused by the delayed reporting of a toxic chemical leak in Stockton and announced an overhaul of environmental laws in the wake of an inquiry into the incident.

Polluting companies will now be required to notify government authorities of hazardous leaks immediately or face a $2 million fine, while the Environmental Protection Authority has been reinstated as an independent authority.

A report by former bureaucrat Brendan O'Reilly into the Orica leak in August was released yesterday along with the new measures, which also include an industry-funded environmental monitoring network in the Lower Hunter and a strengthening of procedures for public notification.

The Environment Minister, Robyn Parker, had come under fire for making the incident public only on the afternoon of August 11 in a statement to Parliament, despite being informed the evening before. The company notified the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) at 10.30am on August 9.

PORTLAND, Ore. ˆ Six workers in the administration and research building of the Portland VA hospital in Southwest Portland were isolated after suffering some kind of skin irritation injury, according to Portland Fire and Rescue.

Spokesman Paul Corah told KATU News four workers reported the injuries after opening an envelope just after 4:30 Wednesday afternoon. Those workers were isolated, and the building's ventilation system was shut down.

Initially, Portland Fire and Rescue said the envelope contained a white powdery substance. But Mike McAleer, spokesman for Veterans Hospital, said it was his understanding it was not white powder.

The workers suffered from burns on their faces, mouths, eyes and hands, according to firefighters. McAleer said the employees were treated with soap and water, which was enough to alleviate the pain.

In addition to the four workers, two members of the security team, who reported similar injuries when they checked on the situation, were also isolated, Corah said.

In total, McAleer said five to eight employees were affected. He also said no patients were at risk.

To determine what it is, the substance is now in the hands of the FBI crime lab.

BETHLEHEM -- A former RPI graduate student who was arrested last November on charges that he kept a potentially volatile cache of chemicals in the basement of his apartment complex pleaded guilty Tuesday to a misdemeanor count stemming from the case.

Jason Sanchez pleaded guilty to one count of obstruction of governmental administration in Bethlehem Town Court. He will pay a $200 fine and serve no jail time.

Sanchez originally was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, a felony, in addition to obstruction of governmental administration and resisting arrest, both misdemeanors.

If found guilty on all three charges, Sanchez could have faced a maximum of nine years in prison. The obstruction of governmental administration charge carried a maximum of one year in jail.

Police found acetone, xylene, sulfuric acid, a propane torch, butane fuel, laboratory-grade nitric acid and a device described by police as a "commercial-grade vacuum chamber" in the basement of the Cherry Arms apartment building Nov. 30.

FARMINGTON ˜ A dangerous substance believed to be part of a meth lab was found near a Farmington school Wednesday afternoon.

Police responded at about 10:30 a.m. to a suspicious object found about 50 feet behind Christian Faith Academy, at 115 E. Corcorran Dr., near Boyd Park. A city of Farmington employee reported the object to police.

Farmington Fire Department's Hazardous Materials Team investigated the object. Inside a gallon container was a substance with a pH of 13 and there was white powdery residue on the outside of the container, said Troy Brown, a battalion chief with the fire department.

A liquid with that pH would be damaging to touch, Brown said.

„It looks like a household item but when you start testing the chemicals and looking at it as a whole you determine what it is,‰ said Jeff Browning, a Region II Narcotics Task Force Agent. „The fire department determined it had a base in it. It is unusual to find a liquid that's a base inside a container sitting in the middle of nowhere with a white substance on the outside.‰

Authorities on Tuesday afternoon briefly evacuated Hackettstown High School after the strong odor of chemicals overtook a high school science lab, according to town police.

Authorities responded about 3:15 to the Warren Street school after staff there detected an overwhelming chemical odor, police report.

After a brief investigation by the Hackettstown police, Hackettstown Fire Department and the Warren County Hazardous Materials Team, it was determined the smelly culprit was a leaking bottle of hydrochloric acid in one of the science room's supply cabinets.

Authorities removed the bottle and cleaned up the residue from the highly corrosive acid, police said. Staff and students inside the school after hours were ordered to leave for one hour as a precaution.

Pittsburg Police officers sealed off the east sidewalk between Sixth and Seventh Streets on Broadway Tuesday afternoon to remove what turned out to be a mobile methamphetamine lab that had been left on the sidewalk.

Hazardous materials technicians separated the contents of the lab, which had been left in a red backpack next door to The Home Place, and neutralized the chemicals. Police officials confirmed the contents of the bag were in fact used to manufacture methamphetamine, but would not release any other details of the investigation because it is ongoing. More details are expected sometime Wednesday.

Pittsburg Fire Department Battalion Chief Jim Radell said a man had approached several of his firefighters while they were stopped at an intersection and told them about the suspect bag. The firefighters then notified Pittsburg Police.

Witnesses said the backpack had been sitting on the sidewalk since Tuesday morning and appeared benign, and that they were surprised when an officer began putting on a hazmat suit to explore the contents.
